Leafs @ sens - Oct. 14th, 7:00pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Bleah, too bad.  Great 3rd though.

You couldn't raise Tavares' temp if you sat him on a Bunsen burner.  He should have thrown a fit there but it's just not in him.

Some slow moments for the team but 48 shots on net and lots of questionable decisions from refs. Not the worst loss to witness.

Throwing a fit wouldn't do anything. Refs ruined the ending though.

I'm still kinda baffled about this one. After this and the Vegas one the league should really put out a statement clarifying whatever the rule is.

Equally baffled.

So tonight I learned that you are allowed to kick the puck into the net and stick lifting is now apparently illegal.  :-\

Not his fault on the last minute penalty but the Leafs need more from Tavares.  With Matthews out he needs to put up more than 1 assist in 2 games.  We need him to score goals.

Coming off the blown playoffs last year the effort to some extent continues to be a real problem.  Two bad starts in a row.

Two games in a row where Muzzin/Holl haven?t been good.  Sandin had a rough first gsme but I think he was better lronight.  Dermott hasn?t been bad but he has been very quiet in terms of doing much of anything of note.

The team needs to be better and two games in a row of not play 60 minutes after last season really just doesn?t inspire confidence in this team being different from previous years.

The refs suck but that?s something we have no control over.  Can?t change bad calls just have to play through them.  The Sens had more puck luck but the Leafs helped them out too.

Clearly the officials decided to create a new standard without informing the teams. Nice of them to make that clear so early in the season.

Yeah and like if that is just the new standard then I actually think that's perfectly fine, I don't mind those goals being called goals. The league just needs to communicate that stuff. And not only to the teams but the fans and media/announcers too.

Redirecting vs propelling seems to be the judgement call here.

Ritchie - Tavares - Marner isn?t working because all three of them, individually, have turnover tendencies, and it is not ideal when Marner is the primary NZ carrier. Muzzin?s early struggles exacerbate that ineffectiveness (might be mutual).

I'm hoping a lot of the issues we're seeing are early season jitters/growing pains from adding a number of new players to the lineup and new coaches to the staff. The first few weeks of any season are always a bit messy.

At least one of the nice things is Spezza still looks good.  He's at 972 points now so have a really good chance to get to 1000 points this year.

If all Marner is good for is passing to Matthews, that?s not such a good thing.

He's good for more than just that, but he needs some support of his own until he sorts out how to hold the puck in his hip pocket more naturally instead of a full stick length directly in front of his chest. Can't pass the puck like a magician if you don't have the puck.

I was thinking last night that Spezza is a guy that looks like he's really trying to change the momentum of the game...the rest of the forwards just seemed to be following the play around.

If they're going to lean on 47 year old Spezza to lead the charge, they're going to have a problem.

Last night's lack of controlling the game was reminiscent of the Montreal playoff series' last 3 games.

And this is where we start down the path of "Has this team learned that they need to put in a solid effort every night?  Do they know how to rise to the occasion?"  These are the types of games that they need to show up for.  It's not that they lost, it's the way they lost.  That discombobulated, ,disorganized feel to their game that rears it's ugly head early on in the season, and when they get a lead in a playoff series.  Those are the games that, that when they lose them, they feel worse than the ones where they look good and just have a couple of things not go their way.
