mirtle: Reports out of Finland have the Leafs signing veteran Euro free agent Petri Kontiola. Could be interesting.

Of course they did. Just can't resist though free wallets, even when they look like they're probably pretty empty.

Don't know their respective ice-times, but he scored at a lower rate than Komarov in the KHL last season (not much lower but lower still).  Will be interesting to see how he fits in.

I wonder if Leo gave them any insight into his game and character? Also, there must be something to him, as 5-6 teams were interested in him.

Sportsnet confirms, it's a 1-year deal:

I'm looking through the numbers at it seems that Kontiola actually scored 3 more goals and had 3 more points in one more game played. I don't know their ice-time or line mates etc. though.

mirtle: Talked to several people about Kontiola in past few days. Not a checker, he's better suited to running a power play etc.

mirtle: Source: "A guy like Kontiola is easy to sign, because if he doesn't do well, you just place him on waivers and he'll be in KHL in no time."

Perhaps I was looking at Komarov when I thought it was Kontiola?  Regardless, they're very close in any event so I think the point remains that the numbers may help set expectations for him.

Hmm...quoted from the article linked above.

Known primarily as a playmaking centre, he amassed 112 assists and 175 points in 258 regular-season KHL games for Traktor and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

In 12 NHL games with the Blackhawks during the 2007-08 season, Kontiola had five assists.

Anybody else think we are trading Kadri? I'm not saying that Kontiola replaces that, but Nonis also said that they are giving Holland a big chance. Then add in that we already have an offer on the table for Legwand, somebody is leaving, no?

Maybe Petri and Phil became buddies in Sochi.

Interesting:

@jhiitela:

by purely offensive skills, he's better than any other current Leafs center.

That's from Juha Hiitel?, the NHL correspondent for Finnish sports paper/site Urheilusanomat.

I find that kind of hard to believe, but we'll see. Not entirely sure where he fits on the team. Will the Leafs run Bozak-Kadri-Kontiola-Holland down the middle and basically use 4 offensive lines? Seems unlikely. I'd still be pushing to sign Legwand and use this guy on the wing:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Kontiola
Komarov-Legwand-Clarkson
Ashton-Holland-Frattin

Yeah, I'll take that with a grain of salt.

So I suppose Nonis trip to Finalnd to woo Komarov might have involved a visit with this guy too.

Nonis spoke about wanting 2 or 3 guys competing for those bottom two centre spots, so I think they see Bozie and Kadri as the 1/2 going in to next year.

is this what Burkie would call "finding a wallet?" those didn't always work out too well. Why not though.. Wonder what the cap hit is?
