How can he burn a year of his ELC with 9 games left?

That 9 games thing only applies to 18/19 year olds.

So its just a normal contract in that regard? Even if he appears in no NHL games, its burns a year?

I want to say yes. I think sometimes the media makes it seem like it's playing a game that burns off the year, but really the Leafs have signed this kid to a 2-year deal for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. He's 23 so there's no sliding years here. The contract has kicked in immediately. Toronto could technically send him home with his signing bonus and that should count as a year.

The other scenario that generally happens here is a team signs a player to a contract that starts next season, and then has their AHL team sign him to a PTO so he could play the remainder of the season/playoffs there.

If he's added the the NHL roster and receives an NHL pay cheque (other than his signing bonus), then, yes, it burns a year of the contract. Apparently, the reason the Sabres didn't sign him was they weren't willing to burn the 1st year of his contract like this.

It really is insane to me.  Even if Bailey were to come in and have a really good season, it would be the difference between a 2-3~ million dollar contract and an ELC with a base of 925K with bonus structure.

I don't understand why they would choose to not sign a player they otherwise wanted for that reason. It's like giving him a one year contract instead of a two year contract. They'd retain his rights as an RFA and if his value goes up after one year, it'll be because he was a good player. If he doesn't impress at at all, then they can let him go after one year.

Buffalo is only 3 points into last place. Perhaps they didn't want anyone with scoring potential joining the team and upsetting the tank, and said no pro games this year. Apparently he wants to play this year and maybe that was the sticking point

I thought the sliding year thing applied to all ELC's and they've been calling his contract an ELC.

Only junior eligible players are impacted by the 10 game rule. All other players are on the clock the second they start earning anything other than their signing bonus. Is Bailey were willing to sign a PTO to play with the Marlies, then his contract would slide, but, since he'll be playing with the Leafs, it won't.

I think one of the good things about Bailey that makes him unlike some of the college UFA's in the past is that with guys like Bozak and Hanson and whoever there was a real sense of pressure on them to come into the organization and fairly quickly make a contribution to a team that needed to make the playoffs. Bozak especially was someone brought onto a team that desperately needed a #1 centre, had no real plan to get one and as a result was thrust into the role as a rookie. In a lot of ways his inability to fill that role is going to define his time here which was never really fair to him.

In this case though Bailey can come into the team and be whatever he is. If he ends up contributing, another asset is always welcome. If not, still worth a shot.

AC: What made Toronto the right fit? That's a name...obviously you were in Bruins camp, camp with the Flames... Toronto, what made that become part of the equation?

Casey Bailey: "I had a great chat with Brendan Shanahan and I really liked what he was saying about their future, and how he sees me helping them out. I'm just ready to go there and help out as much as I can, and learn and become a better hockey player."

Looks like Shanahan had a hand in closing the deal

He started doing his job on arrival, firing Louselle and Poulin, hiring Dubois and Hunter. This was always a throw away year, don't see why folks are not getting that was part of the plan.  Now tanking for the chance at a franchise player as well.

that would be a kick if another Baum was on the team

Who is this Baum fellow?  :o

I thought we'd be more interested in signing another Baun!  8)

Okay, fine, my brain took Kyle Baun's name and morphed it into Frank Baum, author of the Oz books.  Like YOU'VE never done that  :P  :D
