Leafs sign Daniel Winnik

JvR - Bozak - Kessel
Booth - Kadri - Lupul
Komarov - Holland - Clarkson
Winnik - Santorelli - Frattin
Bodie - Kontiola

Phaneuf - Franson
Gardiner - Robidas
Rielly - Polak
- Granberg

I think the PK will thank having Winnik on the team. Orr and maybe Ashton are goners I think. We could even see Reimer and or Franson out of here also before the roster is settled.

Ashton could probably net a mid pick, but could also maybe sweeten and Franson deal to the right team. But even if there isn't a trade, obviously guys are going to get waived after camp. You have to love the competition we'll see in that camp though.

Also, it's not beyond painfully clear that guys like Orr and McLaren no longer have a spot on the team.

Poor Marlies. Orr, McLaren, Broll, Devane, Ross, Biggs. Hopefully somebody snags Orr and/or McLaren off waivers.

If someone doesn't, they also both count towards the cap?

No one earning $925K or less counts against the cap if they're in the AHL this coming season - so, no, not a single player CtB lists would impact the cap if they're in the Marlies.

jonasTSN1050: Leafs bottom-6 in opener last year was Raymond-Bolland-Bodie, Ashton-McClement-Orr. Stand to claim improved depth from that group this fall.

Only 3 of 6 under contract with the Leafs, and, possibly none will make the opening night roster.

Go check the last sentence in his Wikipedia page before its deleted. LOL

Well, that made my day. :P

For those who missed it, I was able to get it from the edit history.

"On July 28, 2014, Winnik signed a one-year contract with his hometown team, the Toronto fucking worst team in the league, Trade Phaneuf"

This likely virtually guarantees him a spot in the line-up too. Winnik, Komarov, Santorelli, JVR, and Bozak make for a decent collection of penalty killing forwards. Booth doesn't really have a history of PK work but his speed could make him an option. Wouldn't mind seeing Holland get a bit of spot duty there either, just to give him an increased role. I know Spott used him on the PK a bit during the playoffs.

Every time the Leafs get a penalty, Randy will look down the bench for Jay McClement and a single tear will fall.

I really like the make-up here. All the guys they signed are decent players, with higher upside in different areas of the game.

All these guys and some of the ones from the Marlies have about a month and a bit to think about how hard they'll have to work to land a spot on this team.

yes as demograhics and other statisical data find that hockey players returning home either suck (Clarkson) or get injured (Bolland) and help carry on the Leaf Curse.  Can anyone spell H____d  B_ll___d.

my feeling is that Holland and Frattin aren't making this team.

I think they still do. I think it's more likely that this means Bodie doesn't make the team. I also think it's an indication that guys like Holland, Kontiola, Frattin and Ashton aren't likely to be every day guys when everyone is healthy, and even that Clarkson could easily find himself in the press box if he doesn't perform. The team has a lot more NHL depth now than they did last season.

Also, it's not beyond painfully clear that guys like Orr and McLaren no longer have a spot on the team.

Ah yeah... Bodie - forgot about him.

Yup he'd be bottom of the depth chart now if you don't consider Orr and McLaren, which I don't.

Did not mind him some years ago with the Coyotes. Good Pker and defensive forward. Can hit some - not a wimp. Not a bad price. Can't beat the term.

Plenty of competition for the bottom six - which is a good thing.

Depth is never a bad thing.  I like Winnik on his own and I certainly like him at 1.3 million.  Not sure how they juggle these roster moves though as a few decent players are going to be in tough to get any ice time.  The thing for me is that these guys are all 3rd/4th liners so they will have very little value prior to deadline deal Shan-nanigans.  It isn't like you could trade Lupul or Kadri and he satisfied with Holland or Kontiola on your 2nd line.

I love the depth though and there is literally zero justification for Orr to be on the roster now.  Good PK players should trump useless fighter 100% of the time.

The best part of these additions that will be battling for the bottom 6 is that most of them are good skaters.  We needed more energy on the bottom half that can play.  I watched Winnik with the Coyotes plenty and he plays a lot like Bodie but is a better player.  Skates hard and doesn't quit while throwing the body around enough to keep other team on guard.

Hopefully among the many bottom-6 options they've got a few guys who will get hot(ish) for a handful of games and, when swapped in and out, provide some secondary scoring. Last season saw the team fail to address its needs (top-4 defender and more quality center depth) while creating new problems with respect to bottom-6 depth. To me, they looked improved from last season, but still not much better than the season before (though I guess the tandem should count as a positive).

Still not sure that they have a complete second line.
