Leafs sign David Kampf

Wasn't qualified by Chicago, but many expected him to still be re-signed there. Could be a 3C, kinda meh on him though.

I'm kinda meh, because with the way they were going, I would rather a couple of more lower priced guys rather than this guy.

I don't get it.  2x1.5 as in 750K x2 years = 1.5M sure.

He has career highs of 8G and 19P.  I'm not seeing why 2 years or why 1.5M here when we are already playing with pennies to build out depth.

Depth is depth, right?

Sorta. If he's a 3C then I would have liked to aim a little higher. If he's a 4th liner then he'll perform well but $1.5mil is pretty pricey for that.

Somebody tell me how this guy is worth more than league minimum X 1 yr.

Defence first forwards are always in demand. I'm sure Toronto wasn't the only team negotiating with him.

Apparently Blackhawk fans really liked him and wondered why he wasn't qualified:

They are?

Yeah. Not for big money, but they have value around the league.

That's big money for the cap situation the Leafs are in.

Spezza signs for $750K so that he can watch them sign this guy for $1.5m?

What is going here?

From the Athletic's profiles on guys who weren't qualified:

There isn?t a ton of offensive pop to Kampf?s game, but he ticks a ton of boxes for any team in the market for a fourth-line centre.

Kampf and the Blackhawks are still engaged in contract talks and could come to an agreement, according to The Athletic?s Scott Powers. If the Czech-born defensive pivot hits the open market Wednesday, however, expect there to be a fair number of suitors of his services.

The 26-year-old pivot is a reliable faceoff winner, led all Blackhawks forwards in penalty killing ice time by over 40 minutes this past season and while his offensive production was non-existent ? just one goal in 56 games played in 2021 ? he?s still a decent bet to be a 10-goal fourth-line centre, capable of logging a ton of penalty killing minutes and giving any teams star players 10 to 11 five-on-five minutes of relatively worry-free rest per game.

There?s value in that, at the right price. And in a free-agent market with very few centre options, Kampf should have a decent market.

He sounds like an ok player I'm just not sure about the AAV. Or if the team sees him as a 3C or 4C.

He scored 1 goal last year but he's a good bet to score 10 a year???

"good bet" was probably generous but he did score 8 in 70 games the season before. This past season seems like more of the aberration.
