Leafs sign Frederik Gauthier to ELC

PPG isn't actually all that impressive of an offensive stat.  It has him in a tie for 36th in QMJHL PPG pace.  That has him tied for 23rd in overall point totals in playoffs.  It's certainly not bad production but it's still not numbers that project as a future offensive contributor at the NHL level.

1 goal in 13 playoff games. 7 of his points came in Rimouski's 4 game sweep in the first round. Has 6 points in 9 games since then.

Isn't the story 'he's a defensive stalwart while contributing offensively"?

If he prevents one or two goals a game by his presense on the ice, that can almost be counted as offense in a strange demented way.

The best goalies in the world aren't worth two goals a game.

Yes but Defense and Goalies are meant to defend, if an offensive player can save a goal a game by his stalwart play then in my sick twisted mind I can almost justify my reasoning.

Yes. And my point is that if a forward was worth a goal a game to a team defensively he'd be the greatest defensive forward ever.

Let me be the first to say that I hope that Fredrik Gauthier is indeed the greatest defensive forward ever.

Don't disappoint me, Freddy!

I hope he wins the David Steckel award for most faceoffs won in the defensive zone and scores 30 goals. When he becomes rich he offers Tyler Biggs a job as his chauffeur and Percy a job as his sommelier.

12/31 on faceoffs and a -1 in the opening game of the QMJHL finals in a 7-4 loss.

Interesting article on Freddy

It's a stupid clickbait title from the editor in an otherwise tame article.  He's had an overall good year assuming you buy into the limited expectations for Gauthier as a 3rd/4th line projected player.  He could very well end up being a valuable player in the same vein as a Sammy Pahlsson or he could be a limited contributor like Dave Steckel.  He's good defensively and he takes a lot of faceoffs and still has a very good overall percentage.

Good to see our prospects having some success. It'll be nice if he can eventually make it as a 3rd line centre, but the NHL is evolving into a three scoring line league, so 4th line is probably his ceiling.

I think there's been a little too much divisiveness re: Gauthier. I think he probably tops out as being a good 4th line guy on the PK but, you know, a good prospect in that direction isn't the worst thing in the world. Sure, you might like a higher ceiling guy there but spilled milk and all that.

I think it's too early in his hockey development to put him at a 4th line potential.Big guys like him take longer to mature physically and to refine their game.

John Cullen might of been a more talented 2nd line center, but I always felt more comfortable when Krushelnyski or Zezel were out there.
