Leafs sign Mike Santorelli

On one hand I want them demoted so Carlyle doesn't play them but on the other had I don't want them taking a roster spot in the AHL either.

I agree, but, at the same time, you see more of that type of player in the AHL, so, at least, they'll serve their useless purpose there.

Well, if fighting has any actual value it is as entertainment and the Marlies wouldn't mind the ticket sales, I'm sure.

Didn't Spott make McLaren a healthy scratch last season?  I'd like to see that.

Anyone know the cap situation when putting guys in the minors?  I remember something about cap relief up to $900k or something, so if the Leafs bury both Orr and McLaren does this mean no affect on the cap?  Orr is at $925k and McLaren at $800k

It's up to $925k, so yeah if they go down they won't count against the cap at all.

Fantabulous!

What I like about the moves the Leafs have made this off-season is that that they've mostly focused on guys that skate well. Definitely seems like they've at least acknowledged how important it is for everyone in the lineup to have good mobility, and that poor skaters need to be excised (hence buying out Gleason, offering up Franson's rights for Gorges, etc).

Ditto this post is bang on!

Excluding the princess not being able to swivel from forward to backward skating not quite up to NHL standards.

And a must is having a forth line play upwards of 10 min a game and contributing ala most successful teams in the league.

I really believe this contributed significantly to the collapse last year along with burnout to most top end players on the leafs.

I wonder is signing these older 3rd line type guys will push Holland out of the line up.  This guy was a center with size, young and still has potential of being a good 2nd liner.  I hope they still keep a spot for him, but it looks like a crowded forward ranks next year.

Yes agreed
I like Holland and that's where I see his ceiling is at 2nd line.

He's shown to be skilled with quick release in close.

Maybe compete level holding him back?

I don't think so, I've seen his compete level rated at about 66 out of 84 while league average is around 52 out of 87.

Yikes....not exactly a deep forward unit. Secondary scoring will probably be an issue again next year.

I never expected you to turn verbs into nouns, Potvin.  Others, yes.  But not you.  :'(

You're correct for the most part, but I think there are enough project's in the bottom 7 forwards that even if only 2 or 3 perform above expectations you could have a pretty solid group.

I like the fact they have depth and center now, because to me, Holland has to prove he's an NHL player, which he's far from having done. There'll be competition at camp, and options throughout the season. Nonis has done well here to address a need, without committing heavily to cap or term.

I agree, though Steve Spott was pretty strong with his opinion, that Holland is an NHL centre. He needs show it but that's encouraging to me.

Holland has to prove that he belongs on the team. yes he played alright for us next year. It was streaky IMO
