If they didn't sign Fraser and could find a way to move Liles they could maybe grab Gilbert for the bottom pairing with Ranger... maybe?

Gunnar Phaneuf
Gardiner Franson
Gilbert  Ranger

I think they're going to need a little more sandpaper there Tigger.

Sure, where are they getting it?

I think that's where Fraser comes into play.

I figure Fraser Ranger is bottom pairing.

You could be correct with that pairing but I don't know how healthy he is, there's a contract to deal with and I already said I think he's a 7d.

A better player with similar grit at 6 would suit me, so maybe not Gilbert but also not Fraser.

Don't count out Granberg for 5-6th dman shooting from the right side, by all accounts he was the most impressive prospect in the recent camp and could already be NHL ready. I'd still guess that he'd start the season with the Marlies but you never know, if he's ready he's comparable to a more physical/slightly less offensive (at least at this point) Gunnar.

Have to see how that goes for him but that would be great if it happened.

I really like Fraser in the 3rd pairing with the cap crunch we are facing.  I like that he hits, clears the net, drops the gloves and does so on the cheap.  Sure he makes mistakes but they were limited in my eyes and his game far exceeds his contract value and that will be so important going forward.  Try to find a million dollar defenseman that does everything Fraser does and that isn't on an ELC.  We need a guy like him and the grit that he and Clarkson bring are huge and that is not even throwing Orr and McLaren into the equation.  I always felt with Fraser in the lineup, we didn't need both Bomber bros in the lineup and now with Clarkson also thrown into the mix, that should be even more of a reality.

Can he still toss them with a steel plate in his forehead though?

I'm not agreeing with you just because I have had a strong view towards the resigning of Fraser, but the points you've mentioned are valid. When anyone on our Defence core was getting pushed around, Fraser seemed to be one of the only ones that could handle himself.  IMO of course..

Man of steel!!!

Good question though, I am sure that may make him a bit more tentative.  I would imagine this would be investigated by both parties and the Leafs may even use it as a negotiating tactic both now and at the hearing.

Negotiating tactics or not, he will not be nearly as effective if he is unable to throw around some punches once and a while.

I am sure the Leafs have discussed all of this with the Docs.
