Hummm... Carrick chances just went down... Polak will be a regular... Corrado can sits and Carrick will start at the AHL

Also forgot about Holland...

Carrick would have to clear waivers. No way the team exposes him.

forgot about that little detail (waivers)
Carrick >>> Corrado, IMHO

To keep both (Carrick, Corrado) they would most likelly to send down a kid that dosen't need to clear waivers or Greening/Michaleck.

So, question is, who should they try to keep ?

Corrado
Greening
Michaleck

Does anyone think that Michalek and Greening might get waived to the Marlies?

After the lousy trade-deadline returns this past season, I'm not as sure they'll give them a spot on the big club if one of the younger players outplays them, which I think is a very strong possibility.

It's a possibility, but, my guess is Babcock will be somewhat faithful to the vets - especially those on expiring contracts - in a season where results aren't super important.

As for the trade deadline returns being a factor - I supposed that depends on whether management feels last year was more of a anomaly or an indication of the future of the market. This isn't the first time we've seen a deadline pass with relatively weak returns league-wide - 2009 was pretty similar - with the market rebounding the next season. It wouldn't surprise me if they gamble somewhat on there being a rebound this season - and, really, they don't have much to lose by doing so.

I think that we'll likely see pairs of JVR-Kadri, Bozak-Marner, Matthews-Nylander, Martin-Laich throughout the year. The 3rd spot on those lines can mix and match. Michalek and Greening could lose their spot to Hyman and Soshnikov but I think they'll really have to put in a poor showing at camp for that to happen. I'd like to see those kids in there but I don't see it happening to start the season.

On defence personally speaking I think I'd like to see something more like Rielly-Zaitsev, Gardiner-Carrick, Marincin-Corrado, Hunwick-Polak. A lot of it will depend on how Babs decides to form the top pairing. He has 4 lefties and 4 righties, but I just don't think he'll trust any of those righties to play with Rielly right off the bat. But maybe Zaitsev playing top pairing minutes with Russia could change his mind about that.

That's a similar roster to what I expect - though I think Brown, Hyman, and Soshnikov are all battling for the same spot right now (not necessarily in the lineup, but on the roster).

I doubt Michalek will be waived, Greening maybe but even with him there'd have to be a clear cut choice.

It's sad this conversation is necessary.

Updated training camp roster in numerical jersey order.  Guess what number Matthews is.

Really think Hyman is going to break through year...
Not a lot of talk about him because of all the glitterhype but you may be right. I see a career path for him similar to Steen's, with some patience he will reveal more facets to his game.

I remember thinking Rielly reminded of someone when he played for TNA at the Worlds, just the way he was passing and creating and after reading the coverage of Kaberle retiring, it's Kabs.

Rielly is like an elite skating version of Kaberle and is definitely a top pairing dman now, he's just going to do it with his stick and his skating and is not going to be a big checking presence. He'll need a more defensive minded partner that can also skate and help cover Mo's attacks.

It's Steve Simmons, lest anyone waste a mouse click..

This line stood out to me, when he was talking about Tomas Kaberle being an overlooked Leaf:

And he pretended he couldn't speak English longer than any Toronto athlete in recent memory, which kept him out of the spotlight.

At first I thought, there goes Simmons slagging on a player and saying things that aren't true about him even when he's trying to praise him. But then I realized that if that is true it probably makes me like Kabby even more than I already did.

I don't see much comparable between Rielly and Kaberle other than they both play(ed) defense. Kaberle was a passer, and a great one; you'd never see him jump into a rush, and if he ever shot the puck, it was a complete last resort.
Rielly on the other hand pinches a great deal, joins the rush, skates out the puck, shoots, and while not a physical dman, at least takes the body routinely along the boards.

Besides, if they were that comparable, at least half the board would have suggested that the team consider moving Rielly to forward by now. ;)

So the Leafs are over the cap by ~$700K.  What does that mean?  If they unload someone via a trade midway through the season, does that bring them back down under the cap?  Maybe their strategy is to load up now and then unload everyone at the trade deadline if they tank again this season.  IMO the Leafs are too good this year to tank, though.  Their defense will be really bad but otherwise they are going to be an interesting team this year.
