Leafs @ Wings - Oct. 9th, 7:30pm - SN, TSN 1050

I see what the Leafs are trying to do, but with a team full of Mike Commodores, it's not going to be successful.

I wish Twitter would go away.  It just enables every pinbrain on the face of the planet to blat out any random half-assed thought that comes into their alleged minds.

It's rough going, but they are playing a more talented team that is far more experienced at playing the system Toronto is trying to play. The Wings have looked like they knew what Toronto was going to try before they tried it, something to aspire to I guess.

Maybe it's just me it bothers, because I'm not a "hockey fan", but this is a Leafs broadcast and as a Leafs fan I REALLY don't care even a little bit about Larkin. I get that there isn't really anything to talk about regarding the Leafs, but if that's the case can't they just call the damn game?

Then again I could always just mute it. I guess I just feel a home broadcast should talk about the home team, even if it is just them saying how bad they are.

That first goal by Bernier was just abominable.  At least when Belfour had that run way back when he was giving up a raft of early goals, you knew that he was (or had been) a high-quality goaltender.

Are you new to these broadcasts?

It's literally all they do, ever single game.

Reimer kept that from being a cricket score.

Bernier needs to be returned to L.A.  He's definitely a defective product.

Yeah I know that. I was just wondering if I was the only one who doesn't give a crap about players on other teams. I know some people here are hockey fans and might actually be interested in players on other teams, and so those people wouldn't really mind the incessant chatter about how great the other teams are.

I miss Joe Bowen.

I like getting stuff on other players, but yeah, it feels like all of our regional broadcast games are national games where there isn't the slightest bit of focus on the Leafs.  They also seem to take some form of joy in reminding everyone how bad the Leafs are.

Indeed, I get that Bowen was a homer, but he's the yin to their yang and I know which I'd rather be subjected to for 82 games.

It was a pretty big night for a hometown'ish kid and his family.

I didn't have a problem with the focus on him.

Honestly, I think they're going to be talking quite a bit about other teams this year...there really aren't very many interesting storylines on the Leafs' side this year.  Also, they suck.

I used to have a friend who would come over and make fun of me every time the Leafs would screw up. It made me decide not to invite him over anymore during games because I couldn't enjoy it. The game stopped being fun to watch. After a while it became apparent that he wasn't watching the game because it was fun but rather to get under my skin.

Glen Healy reminds me of that guy. Adds nothing positive to the experience and isn't looking to. Does anyone like Healy and his pseudo-intellectualism? Why do we keep inviting him then? Forget fans being negative, when do we point out that the negativity is built into our broadcasts?

I understand and accept that the team will be a losing team for the next few years. We were told that at  the beginning of off season. Do I really need to listen to Healy badmouthing the team the entire time as well? No; I don't. I will simply do what I did last year and stop watching. Not because the team is playing poorly but rather because of how the games are presented to me. I have no interest in listening to a has-been backup goalie felate himself over other teams players while telling us how crappy our team is.

ITS OUR BROADCAST! Unbiased colour made sense when the Leaf games were the only one broadcast for free so rather then being a Leafs broadcast it was the national broadcast, and many people would tune in to see the other team as well. This is no longer the case, so why are we acting like it is? Watch the other teams broadcast and you'll see that they are biased for the team they are broadcasting. It makes sense. Why alienate the audience who are here to watch their team.

We all knew the team would be bad this year, we don't need to be reminded of the extent every single minute of every single game. Can someone please hand Healy the memo? and his pink slip?

Uh, wasn't last night a national broadcast? It was listed as Sportsnet, not Sportsnet Ontario on the broadcast schedule.

I thought only Saturdays were? It is entirely possible. Not that it changes much, point being that for a while it was the only option for hockey for some fans, and that is no longer true.

Truth is I don't really want a bunch of 'Homer' announcers anymore then I want a 'Troller' announcer. (Is there a word opposite of Homer already? If not im coining Troller to mean an announcer who takes every opportunity to belittle or badmouth a team. The opposite of a Homer)

Yeah and I'm not defending somebody like Glen Healy who is a note piece of crap, but the people who were saying that they don't want to hear about Larkin on "our" broadcast or "the Leafs" broadcast are being a little unreasonable I think. National broadcast or not (it was), Larkin is a high-profile prospect a Michigan kid playing in his first NHL game in his home state. That was easily the 2nd most interesting story about the game behind the Babcock/Wings reunion. They were going to talk about it (especially in a game that I'm assuming didn't exactly have a lot to talk about).

I didn't mind the Larkin talk either. The biggest offensive weapon the Leafs have put on the ice this season is a skate, and their starting goalie lets in the first shot of every game. So really not a lot to talk about on that side of the ice.

Yeah but who are they broadcasting the game for? Making a Leafs game a national broadcast doesn't make it any less a Leafs broadcast. I can understand Hockey Night in Canada needing to be unbiased, but the Leafs logo was slapped all over the place last night. There was no mistaking who the target audience was.

Perhaps they think they need to draw other audiences in to keep the ratings up? I don't know if it's working or not, but it's certainly driving me away.

I get that. If there is a story to tell its not as nauseating and I like a feel good story as much as the next guy. It just takes me back to good ol McGuire and his love interest Zach Parise. It seems that there is a new Crosby on every team the Leafs play against. They spend almost the entire 3 hours talking about that 'one' player.

An example of what I mean

Player skating into offensive zone, falls flat on his face, slides helplessly in front of the net puck bounces in after being deflected off the players body.

Leafs prospect? "Player has suspect skating ability/is lazy/gives up on the play/lacks heart/was lucky other player was able to score despite being a man down because prospect was on the ice.

Any other team? "Player has great on-ice vision, got himself low to direct it expertly past the goaltender, didn't give up on the play, probably should have been a Leafs penalty, can you believe they got him in the X position in the draft?"
