Letang wants to be a Leaf?

Liles being a piece in a possible Letang trade was floated elsewhere and I kind of think that makes some good sense for the Pens.  He helps fill the Letang void and for probably half the price tag.

Also helps the Leafs move some redundant salary.

That would be awesome if this scenario was to play out. I'd be a bit better off with those conditions.

I'm a pro Letang.

And I do think that any trade for him will involve Kulemin + Something (another roster or 1st rounder, top prospect. If that Something is only Liles, they shoud do it.

His numbers over the last two seasons are really impressive, and he can play some big time minutes...unless the cost is astronomical, I think you have to consider him...

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Hearing that Letang camp informed Penguins earlier tonight that they were turning down an 8-year contract offer worth around $56 million...

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Whether more contract talks are coming or whether Pens put Letang on trade market remains to be seen...

Another Jordon Staal situation?

-Free agency begins July 5, and the Penguins do not want to arrive at that date without resolution on Letang's future, the sources said.

-The Penguins are agreeable to paying Letang slightly over $7 million annually, sources said.

-The offer to Letang could be considered the third most lucrative to retain a player in Shero's seven-year tenure.

-Letang's situation is seemingly playing out similarly to the one faced by center Jordan Staal last summer. Then, the Penguins presented an offer with little wiggle room ? 10 years at around $57 million ? and after Staal rejected it, Shero traded him to Carolina for a package that included eighth overall pick (defenseman Derrick Pouliot) at the NHL Entry Draft, center Brandon Sutter and defensive prospect Brian Dumoulin.

Letang would be the best defenceman we've had since... uh... Salming?

Nahhhh. He's a good player but there's not much difference there between Kabs or McCabe in their prime.

I'd be inclined to offer them our 1st this year, Franson or Gunnarson and Finn or Percy. Maybe throw in our second next year if they declined. Too little? Too much?

Under the cap circumstances (cutback this season),
http://capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=470&year_id=2013
when I look at the link of comparable contracts, I'd say the Pens made him a pretty decent offer (if the report is accurate).

And they're offering him at least five years of feeding Crosby, Malkin & Neal - and the playoff berths that are likely to follow them.

Letang lead his team in time on ice per game during the regular season and the playoffs so it's not like he's been getting shafted for opportunity.

I find it hard to believe he'd turn down such a deal unless he thinks they'll sign and trade him.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Also told that Letang camp counter-offered with a long-term deal which would pay less than $8 M (north of $7.5 M); Pens said too high

Letang's a good player and all, but is he an almost $8M per player? I'm not so sure - especially considering the assets the Leafs would have to sacrifice to acquire him.

I wouldn't trade for him..not at the inevitable asking price, the bidding war to get him, and then the ridiculous contract he'd want/warrant.

So they're what, about $5mil apart on an 8-year deal? That doesn't sound like a gap big enough to have to trade him a year before he hits the market.

My guess is $6M, and likely some significant structural differences (most likely signing bonuses rather than year to year breakdowns) and possibly movement restriction differences. Seems unlikely for it to be enough to push him out the door unless he really wants out, but, then again, strangers things have happened.

Wow!! Does he ever want a TON of money to play with some of the best hockey players in the NHL.

I am not as interested in Letang anymore.

I get the feeling that you're going to be very, very disappointed in a lot of players and how much money they want.

$6.75M/season x 8 seasons isn't enough?!?! Maybe he simply wants out of PIT?

How much does he realistically expect to make?
