Liles Contract Extension (4 years, 3.875 AAV)

Yeah, it was the Philly pick the Leafs used for Percy though Colborne, Percy and Liles would still look pretty good for Kabs.

Probably has to give a list of some sort. I have no problem with these sort of NTC's. I mean, nobody should have to get traded to Edmonton.

Liles interview on the Fan 590:

Says a lot of nice things about the Leafs organization. One of the hosts asked if Liles had any regrets about not going to July 1st... like 10 minutes after he signed the contract.

It is interesting that the negotiations took place so quietly with no advance discussion in the media.

Makes me wonder why I waste so much time listening to the talking heads on TV who speculate on trades and signings that never happen?  Or, worse yet, reading Eklund!

Any bets on whether similar negotiations are taking place with Grabovski?

"He would  run through a brick wall for" Burke and called him a great leader, nice.  Let's hope some ufa's are listening, maybe they'll give us a discount to come play under a GM like that.

Per capgeek:

NTC (can list 18 teams he will not accept a trade to) - I'm assuming this part of his new deal and not his current one.

That applies to his current contract Sarge. No details yet on the scope of limitation in his new deal so far.

Okay... Thanks for clarifying that. So I guess Toronto was 1 of the other 11 teams he'd accept a trade to or, he waived it in order to come to Toronto then. Either way, it seems Toronto really is place he enjoys and his quotes of today are more than just the standard lip service... It's nice to hear.

It certainly was a pleasant surprise hearing that interview and seeing the contract numbers, unfortunately for Kaberle he felt the same way when he was a prime chip and the team needed the influx... though it didn't seem like Burke had to beat the bushes too hard to replace him. :(

Man, when it comes to re-signing players, Burke is like a ninja. When it comes to UFAs, I don't know what happens.

The flow of the team offense is very different when he is back there...he also makes the PP very dangerous.  On the flip side, he's not all that great in the defensive zone and that makes for some harrowing experiences at times but I can live with a sub-4M contract.  He's certainly still movable if Gardiner establishes himself as a go-to guy offensively down the road.  I honestly think he would have gone for 4.5-5M as a free agent, so to sign him at 3.85 is more than a little reasonable (maybe a concession for the 4th year?)

It certainly does look like someone is going to be gone soon on the blueline though.  Between Holzer in the AHL, Aulie as the 7th D-man and the glut of Schenn/Komisarek/Franson/Gunnarsson, something is going to have to happen soon and if they find a way to add an impact player, or even find a way to turf Komisarek's contract so that they can add a forward in the offseason, that would be huge.

I certainly reiterate your comments when it comes to Komisarek.  That his contract is bad is axiomatic;  that his play is not much better than his contract is not really open to that much debate, IMHO.

Of course Burke seems to really be in his corner, because he signed him for a total of 5 years, with the idea that he was supposed to be the 'shut-down' defenseman that the Leafs needed.  If any GM is foolish enough to take Komi now, then the Leafs should trade him in a second.  I just don't know which GM would be foolish enough to do it, especially if they have ever watched a Leafs game over the past 2 years.

It seems to me that one of the biggest problems of Komi's is that he literally doesn't skate when the puck is on his stick.  He doesn't have much lateral movement, and is slow, and doesn't have much awareness on the ice.  But Burke presumably feels he is still good or more likely because of this ridiculous no-movement contract the Leafs have to play him if they don't trade him.  Otherwise, his salary is still part of the salary cap even if they sent him to the Marlies, a la Finger, as I understand.

Nice start but I had higher hopes. Kind of mirrored our season as a whole.  :-\ Still, I think he's a guy I keep going forward.

I think this may have been part of the downfall this year.  He was supposed to be the one providing a calming influence on the back end.  Once he went out, the wheels came off shortly after and they couldn't get them back on again.  I don't think that this is the only reason the Leafs struggled after January 31, but I think it was a factor.

Well, sure, except that the wheels fell off after he came back.

Have to expect him to be back to his usual self next season.  This looks to be the first season in his career he might not hit 30 points, and I doubt it is a coincidence that it came the first time he suffered a mid-season concussion.

Eh, ultimately he's just like Kaberle without any of the things that made Kaberle fun to watch.
