Lombardi to Phoenix

DarrenDreger: Leafs trade Lombardi to Phx for a conditional pick. Toronto also retains some salary in deal.

I didn't expect a deal this early. I wonder what we get back. Seems like we didn't have to do this right away, but whatever, its not like he brought much last year.

DarrenDreger: Toronto eats Lombardi's $500,000 signing bonus, plus some additional salary.

Of note, this makes the Leafs the first team to use the ability to retain salary in a deal under the new CBA.

GhostofBB

DarrenDreger: Toronto gets a 4th for Lombardi.  A 3rd if he re-signs in Phx.

Realistically, probably wouldn't have been able to get much more than that at the deadline (maybe a guaranteed 3rd instead of a conditional).

Good deal for Nonis. Now he has to deal with Connolly.

Decent deal, not sure I'd have kept any of his salary in an ideal world.

Perhaps a case of doing what they had to, to get the player where he wanted to go and open up a roster spot.

I had some unrealistic hopes for Lombardi but I think we may have seen all he is capable of now.

The Leafs, fortunately, have plenty of cap space this season, so eating a little bit of Lombardi's doesn't really hurt all that much (especially since they do free up some by moving him). It'll be gone by the time it matters - when free agency gets going in the summer.

I'm pretty happy with a 3rd pick. Nothing wrong with stockpiling picks and young talent in the off year. Nonis has said time and again he values youth and I think like Dregs said, at some point you have to give the kids a chance to play rather than just saying it.

I like Lombardi. I think he can still be an effective, speedy 3rd liner with some PK time. But like everyone else says, there's too many forwards on this team. Even with Lombardi gone, Kadri and Frattin may still not get a spot on the opening roster.

Ok Phoenix! TANK TANK TANK TANK! (every bit helps...)

Can Connolly go now too?  LA has to respond to this huge Phoenix move and trade for Connolly.
