Lombardi to Phoenix

A potential 3rd pick for an extra roster player on the Leafs is much better than I thought Nonis would get.  In my fantasy world I was looking for a max of a 2nd so I am pleased for Toronto, Phoenix AND Lombardi.

This 'Burke' rule of cap space/salary sharing is fantastic!

This pick up would put Phoenix near the cap floor if they took all his salary, so hopefully Toronto didn't keep much.

Lombardi to Phoenix...Hearing the Leafs retain about $1.5 Million in cap space...Coyotes to carry a 2 Million cap hit.

Phoenix is well above the cap floor, which is officially $44M this season.

azc_mclellan: Lombardi is excited to return to the #Coyotes. Acknowleges Maple Leafs wasn't perhaps the best fit. Feels healthy and ready to go.

azc_mclellan: Couple quick comments from Lombardi: "I?m super excited. I never wanted to leave in the first place."

azc_mclellan: More Lombardi: "I feel as good as I?ve felt in a long time. Physically, I?m in great shape."

I hope he does well there.  Never like to see people's careers derailed by concussions.

If Orr doesn't crack the roster, with Aucoin & Hamilton getting waived, here's the 14 forwards left (unless I'm missing someone):
Lupul              Bozak        Kessel
Van Reimsdyk  Grabovski    Kulemin
Komarov          Connolly      Frattin
Brown              Steckel      McClement
MacArthur                          Kadri

The Nashville deal provide them with a conditional 4th round 2013 pick
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/07/03/leafs_trade/
The deal also includes a conditional fourth-round pick that Nashville acquires if Lombardi plays more than 60 games over the next two seasons.

According to Mirtle of the Globe, the Leafs would have got a 4th rounder in 2013 if Lombardi didn't play 60 games.

Lombardi played 62 games last season.

So from the Preds deal, the picks (considering the 3/4 pick from deal) are close to a wash ignoring 2013 is expected to be a good draft.

He's going to go on a Stempniak-style offensive revival in Phoenix. Oh god.

Sure, for 18 games. But then he sucked again right after.

He wasn't in our long term plans and he barely fit in the lineup if at all. Really it doesn't matter if he plays well in PHX because it wasn't going to happen here.

I'm pretty sure Orr is going to make the team.

I heard an interview today where Carlyle called him "Orrsie"

That's about as warm and fuzzy as you are going to get out of Carlyle so Orr must be a lock  8)

Agreed, I'm overjoyed we got rid of Lombardi. Just saying, knowing what's been prone to happen in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if Lombardi rediscovers his game in Phoenix.

Just like Connolly rediscovered his in Toronto. Maybe, they could move Connolly to the Canucks. They need help at centre. Maybe he could "rediscover" his game in a different time zone.

Would I retain roughly a third of Connolly's salary for a 3/4th round round pick to make room for someone else? - Hell yeah!

The Leafs are essentially swaping picks for the 4th round in 2013 with Phoenix, because the Leafs gave up their fourth in the deal that sent Lombardi here.

I read the condition was that Lombardi plays 60 games over 2 years, and he's played 62..

Someone please verify.

Just wanted to say I like the trade. Nothing against Lombardi but I desperately want Kadri and Frattin on this team this year more than guys like Conolly and Lombardi.

Get these kids solid minutes in the NHL. Build for the future.

Edit: Obviously Nonis feels the same way.

I believe we received the 4th rounder in 2014 for Lombardi.
