???

So Lou just signed someone worse than Josh Leivo for 4 years.

At least he looks like Rick Nash in that photo?

If you can't beat them in the alleys then you won't beat them on the ice. It seems like the Islanders are the place where all used up old Leafs go to play out there days in the paddock. Fitting as the new arena will be at the Belmont Grounds.

What is becoming more common is teams allowing coaches to also have a private consultancy.

I wonder if Briere will continue to work with some of the Marlies guys on a private coaching basis.

Yeah, I was wondering about that with Barb Underhill when I heard that she's a for-hire consultant as well.

I would guess that since they work on contract anyways, and since job security in the pro-hockey business is pretty terrible at best, that having the ability to grow your own business, and just invoice the team for services provided probably works well for both parties.

Briere is still on Leafs staff (he also has his own consultancy). If Sparks still needed to talk to Piero Greco once in awhile, I'm sure that'd be allowed if it was on his own time and dime.

Most of our skills coaches have consultancies on the side where they can work with individuals. Barb Underhill works on a team basis with the Leafs and Lightning. Darryl Belfry stipulated that has part of his agreement with the Leafs, so he still does his regular courses and one-on-ones.

It would have gotten in the way of signing Matt Martin and Leo Komarov.

Lol that's exactly what I was thinking

Get in the way of what? Rational thought?  As with any set of data, you have to put it in context and learn how to sift through what's valuable and what's junk.

Burke and Nonis had a similar take when running the Leafs regarding analytics, but if I recall correctly, they were being inundated with stat companies trying to break into the league by offering proprietary metrics. For the mathematically disinclined, yeah, it can definitely impede your decision making (that had proven itself effective previously). At a certain age, when you?re maybe leaning towards cementing a legacy, going out on a limb that you cannot prove the load-bearing capabilities of is quite challenging.

So it is entirely understandable to me why there is resistance to change, especially to a movement/philosophy that is perceived to be out to tell everyone (and by extension you) has been wrong this whole time re: grit, fighting, hits, blocking, slapshots from the point, dressing room character, WASP values, etc.

As one gets older, I think it's probably a hard thing to accept that there are new and different ways of thinking about and doing things in the field that you think you know inside out.

New ideas from the younger generation don't invalidate your years of knowledge and experience. They add to it. I think the last Leafs regime should have hired some young analytics hotshots and had them report to the top brass. Oh well.
