Luongo to Florida

Wow,  good move for the Panthers and absolutely head scratching from Vancouver.  I'm not sure how 20 games from Lack justifies this move.

Canucks fans will be sorely disappointed to find they won't be getting Bjugstad or Huberdeau in return.

Okay. It's totally real.

tsnjamesduthie: Roberto Luongo confirms he has been traded to Florida.  Signing papers right now. #Tradecentre

I'll laugh really hard if Thomas is heading the other way.

LavoieRenaud: #panthers are sending Jacob Markstrom and another player to #canucks for Roberto Luongo #tvasports

My guess is that other player is a bigger contract.

You would have to think Thomas gets moved as well or they let his contract expire. Pretty sure Luongo and Thomas wouldn't coexist very well together both wanting to be the starter.

Maybe Goc as the other player?

They're getting Markstrom in return. How is this not a great deal on Vancouvers end? They cave this year with all the injuries and regroup next year. I think it's a fantastic idea.

Jovanovski maybe?

I was thinking Upshall or Fleischmann, but, yeah, maybe Jovo goes back to Vancouver.

EDIT: Or, not:

reporterchris: It sounds like Shawn Matthias is heading to the #canucks along with Jacob Markstrom.

It feels like we've been waiting forever for Markstrom to finally take the reins of an NHL team, but, when he's had opportunities, he hasn't been great. Part of that is the team he's played for, sure, but, I'm becoming less and less convinced that he's going to be the guy he was once hyped up to be. Getting rid of the contract and the distraction is nice for Vancouver, though, assuming they didn't retain any salary in the deal (and, based on the return, I doubt they did).

If Vancouver isn't sending something else then they are really fleecing Florida and giving them a huge contract with a fairly nice return.

I mean, it sounds more like two teams exchanging problems more than anything with a clear winner.

I don't know if I'd call getting a goalie prospect who is about to become more of a goalie project and a 3rd line forward "fleecing" anyone. Luongo's contract sucks, sure, but, he's still an excellent goalie. Florida is getting the best player in this deal, and by a very wide margin. Florida is also one of the few teams in the league that can absorb the cap hit without impacting their ability to put a roster together.

Regroup? They're going nowhere if they run Lack/Markstrom in net next season. The only good thing it does it set them up for a full-blown rebuild, which might not have happened with Luongo in net because he could have kept them in a playoff race.
