Just told by @DarrenDreger #Leafs are speaking to Joffrey Lupul's people about contract extension. How close is unclear. @TSN1050Radio #NHL

From Dreger

5 year ext for Lupul. $5.25 average salary. Ltd no-trade. Leafs can request list of 14 teams

Confirmed: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=414053

?Joffrey has proven to be a dynamic offensive player and since joining our hockey club he has fit in extremely well with our team,? said Leafs senior vice-president and general manager Dave Nonis in a statement. ?His alternate captaincy is well deserved and, by signing this extension, we look forward to him playing a large role with the Leafs for many years to come.?

Yeah, good deal, maybe a year more than I'd have liked, but this is probably his last significant contract so I can deal.

I was also hoping we could get him closer to the 4.5 mark.

He was a little flat last night with one terrible giveaway I recall, lets hope he quickly turns that around.

Seems like a good deal.  Quite a bit of trade freedom.  He is 29 now?  Locks him up until he is 35?

Somebody just needs to work with him on his defensive zone play.

Nice deal. Only a $1M raise from where he is now. Not too long, and, if he can produce similar to last season, it's on the cheaper side. Keeps the team's options open in terms of free agents, and the only other significant experienced pieces to re-sign this summer are Bozak and Gunnarsson.

A good season, and Lups would have been able to get more than that as a UFA.

JLupul: Thrilled to be a Maple Leaf for 5 more years. Look forward to doing everything I can to help bring a Stanley Cup to Toronto.

Actually cheaper than Grabbo, not bad for the face of the franchise. It's not a huge raise and only 500k more than Connolly ;D. I don't think Lupul will keep up the point-per-game pace, though. That being said, he should still put up at least low-end 1st-line quality numbers (at around 60pts per season) with Kessel, for which the amount is more or less fair. Time will tell, but I consider it a good deal.

SO far I like what Nonis has been doing.

85 points in 95 games as a Leaf.  Essentially 1 1/2 seasons.

77 points in 128 games in the 2 1/2 seasons prior.  Essentially a 50 point player.  If he regresses to that level it's not a great contract but not absolutely awful.  Given that those 21/2 seasons included some pretty significant back issues I think it's at least reasonable to hope that he has the ability to be closer to the 85/95 player than this...especially as he is a #1 PP/#1 line player here unlike in Philly/Anaheim.

I think the deal is buying high a little bit but it could be much worse if they let it sit until the offseason and tried to resign him coming off a repeat near PPG pace.

When Lupul got hurt last year he was a top-10 NHL scorer at just over a PPG pace. The Leafs are getting great value in this deal as long as Lupul keeps it up and stays healthy.

I think he can produce between 65-and 75 pts pace if he continues to get top line ice time and linemates like Kessel .. something he didn't really get in his other stops.

For that kind of production, his contract is on par with most players at that level who have signed in the last 2 years.

The re-signing I have been more worried about is Kessel. In part because he's from the US. And in part because he's a shy guy playing in the craziest media market.

So the re-signing of Lupul, a linemate Kessel has obviously flourished with, might have some real side benefits and help the Leafs from losing Kessel on the UFA market for nothing after next season.

I like the deal, glad he's signed. You can tell he likes living and playing in Toronto. Hopefully Kessel will want to stay, but I'm not as worried as cw is, Kessel has said numerous times, that he likes it in Toronto. I think he's just shy, but not enough to make him run from here.

This gets the LHF roar of approval of course :-)

Lupes is great. Chilled dude, have partied with him a couple times and he loves it here. He is very much treated as royalty, what's not to love? I hope he blossoms further and has several high scoring seasons now in his prime.

He could easily become captain of this team.
