Make Max Domi a Leaf!!!

Howdy Carey, welcome to the board.

The problem with trading for Max Domi is that the Coyotes are a rebuilding team on a pretty strict budget. That means that what the Leafs have in abundance, high priced veteran talent, is probably not very appealing to them. As a result in order to trade for Max Domi you'd almost certainly have to offer the Coyotes a group of prospects and picks that are worth more than Max Domi, at which point it doesn't really make sense for the Leafs.

There's a lot of hype around Domi these days. I'm sure he'll be quite a good player, just not sure how good. I mean, he's two years older than Mitch Marner and Marner's scoring pace was much higher than Domi's this season on the Knights. Even if Arizona for some reason decided to shop him you'd probably need one of Rielly/Nylander/2015 1st to make them move him and I definitely wouldn't pull the trigger there.

Once the WJHC hype train gets rollin' ain't no stopping it.

Probably, but, one can try?  No?

I don't entirely know what you're asking me. Is it possible for the Leafs to offer a trade another team would say no to? Sure. Not really a productive use of time though.

You don't know what the other team's answer would be until you ask the question.  When they hang up on you, that's when you know the answer is NO!

I think in general most NHL GMs have a relatively good enough concept of the relative value of players that they don't really need to waste the time of other GMs.

Well, if that were always true, we'd never see lopsided trades.  No?

I think an experienced GM would have a pretty good idea what the answer would be to that question. This isn't Monopoly or Settlers of Catan.

No. I think most trades happen when a team makes a general call about another player so, for instance, "Hey, we hear Player X is available and we're interested. What do you want for him?". Lopsided trades, which we don't see too often, probably then happen because the team that was asked replies with something low/surprising. It's not the result of cold calling teams and offering them bad trades in the hopes that they say yes.

yep, totally NOT interested in this guy for my *team* ....

We are never going to agree on the general aspects of Domi, but he's absolutely not a guy I would target to acquire.  We already have Nylander, Leipsic and Brown as decent smaller prospects.  There is also a pretty reasonable chance that we may add Marner to the fold.

Domi is a good prospect but he would be more of the same and too much of a thing that won't win you a championship.  He's also an in between prospect.  Not so good that he's a lock to be a 1st line player for the majority of his career but too good to be a guy that a team might sleep on and give up for less than he would be worth in the long run.  The Leafs would pay too much to acquire him and likely wind up giving up more than they get.

Those kinds of trades are moves you make when you already have a stable of players. A team like Columbus could consider a move like that because they have a tonne of 2nd/3rd line prospects who could be packaged for a guy like Domi who is more of a 1st/2nd line prospect.    Teams like Chicago who have to trade good players to get under a cap could look at moves like that when they trade away valuable NHL level players for cheaper contracts.  The Leafs absolutely cannot afford those kinds of trades.
