Maple Leafs in the market for a new Goalie

Patrick said:
Just an update.

Reimer 4-2-3  .920 SV%  .941 5v5 SV% (10th amongst NHL goalies playing at least 300 minutes)
Bernier 0-6-1  .899 SV%.  .915 5v5 SV% (31st amongst NHL goalies playing at least 300 minutes)

Bernier's 5v5 Sv% is probably pretty close to where it'll be going forward. He'll probably come in around .920 at the end of the year. Reimer's will almost certainly come down, as .941 is basically Vezina calibre, and, as much as I like Reimer, he's not on that level.

Reimer's building up some good trade value here.  Hopefully they can capitalize on it this year.

Of goalies that have played at least 6000 minutes over the past eight seasons:

James Reimer .923 5v5 SV%  (24th on list)
Jonathan Bernier .924 5v5 SV% (19th on list)

Reimer is definitely in a purple patch, but his career numbers are near identical to Bernier's. As long as Reimer maintains a relatively solid level of play, he will continue getting a chance I think.

Reimer has been pretty consistent in terms of his 5 on 5 Sv%. Bernier, not so much. .933 in 13/14, .914 last season. That's why I expect Bernier to come out a little lower.

I love Reimer, always have, all through Junior, the minors, he worked his way from mulitiple injures through all the levels to exceed.  Now he has embraced the new method of tracking, even before the Leafs hired the expert, he went out of his way to learn what turned around Dubnicks career, he wanted to get better, to be his best.  Where did Reimer go from a guy handing out the rebounds to the new guy that Babcock says has excellent rebound control? Why is he playing at a Vesina rate?
And why has Bernier not adapted tracking etc over the offseason? Why does he admit to not being mentally tough enough?
Personally I would rather see Bernier go and Riemer stay and help mentor Sparks and/or Bibeau as they make there way into the Leafs system. He has the right energy and personality. Bernier not so much.

What makes you say that Bernier hasn't adopted "tracking"? All reports were that both goalies worked with that goaltending coach over the summer, not just Reimer.

If he continues to play well they may be able to move him, but I can't imagine the Leafs will get anything more than a 3rd. Maybe he's moved as part of a package?

I think you're underrating the kind of trade market that could emerge if there are teams that legitimately need a goalie. Reto Berra got traded for a 2nd at the 2014 deadline.

I read somewhere that Reimer actually sought out on his own the trainer that worked with Dubnyk and changed him from Loser to Winner quickly and started learning the tracking system as soon as the season was over. this is before the Leafs had the specialist hired.
I believe I also read that Bernier did not seek this out and is learning the system thru the new specialists the leafs hired at the end of the summer. So one guy sought it out wishing to learn the latest "anything to get better", to one guy who is learing as part of what he must learn now.  This is what I remember reading but again I am getting older and leave my car keys in the freezer at times.

LOL
I feel you pain, but I also remember reading that. I think Reimer works harder to improve his game and Bernier is happy being on NHL TV and not improving his game. IMO

Maybe they can get a second. I figured a 3rd based on Reimer's contract status, but apparently Berra was also pending UFA when he was traded.

Berra also had played pretty poorly that year. If Reimer still has strong looking numbers at the deadline he could be a pretty significant chip.

Conjecuture while I look for my keys, I have to head to the liquor store.  What if Reimer wins the Vesina as he has adopted the tracking system to zen like levels. Do we get rid of him then or let him mentor Sparks or Bibeau if one should make the leap next year or the year after.

How would the American Civil War have been different if General Stonewall Jackson had been a time travelling Robot Chimp? Discuss and show your work.

You bet, Lou needs to be looking at getting us some real goaltending!  Bernier isn't the answer IMHO.
