Marlies Talk 15/16 - Is Sheldon worth Keefe'n around?

Marlies continue to dominate the AHL, getting back to their winning ways after a brief power outage and sloppy structure last week.

https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2016/03/12/game-review-toronto-marlies-9-vs-portland-pirates-2/

? Toronto Marlies have now scored 9+ goals in a game four times this season. The other 29 AHL teams combined have scored 9+ goals in a game twice.

? Four point games for Mark Arcobello and Connor Brown (both 1G/3A), with the former?s three assists all of the primary variety. ? A double strike for Tobias Lindberg takes him five goals in as many games. He could have easily had himself a hat-trick.

? Josh Leivo, who led all skaters with seven shots, will wonder how he only scored once. At least four of his shots were good chances and he fired the other two wide. A two point game nonetheless.

Marlies reach the 100-pt mark.

Dubas also signed our 2011 5th rd draft pick Tony Cameranesi to an ATO now that his season with University of Minnesota-Duluth is over. He gets to suit up once again with teammate goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo who also signed an ATO with the Marlies yesterday, after signing an ELC for the next two seasons with the Leafs.

I don't think Cameranesi figures into the Leafs' longterm plans, so this might just be one last lingering look.

Cameranesi does have a ton of skill and speed, watched him play some games on TV and was always the best player on the ice for MD.  If Leipsic and Kapanen make the leap next year their may be a seat at the table for him

An interesting article on Colin Smith and how he is doing. He was thought to be an at best, fairly average addition to the Shawn Matthias trade.

He now has 19pts in 17 games with the Marlies.

They should just hand the Marlies the Calder now. Imagine that team when Nylander and the rest come back for the playoffs.  I am actually most excited to see how Neilson fits in, his highlight real is very impressive with  the emphasis on impressive.

Marlies outshot 35-18 today (while resting a few players) and beat Albany 3-0.  Bibeau with the shutout.

This was their line-up today:

Clune-Conacher-Hyman
Leipsic-Smith-Frattin
Kurtz-Cameranesi-Faille
Marchment-Witala-Wong

Percy-Kolomatis
Nielsen-Holl
Corrin-Doherty

Probably the last time we see a line-up with names nobody will recognize. Nylander, Lindberg, Brennan, Carrick, Sparks, Gauthier and Campbell have been sent back. Cam Carrick, Leivo, B. Smith, Arcobello, Brown, Kapanen, and Valiev were all healthy scratches.

Loov and Soshnikov were sent back to the Marlies last week but it looks like they're still injured.

Remember when management talked about using the ECHL as a development team?

For Tapatalk: The Marlies current have 47 players.  They have to hold two practices today (@mirtle)

Lines for their afternoon game today:

C. Smith-Arcobello-Brown
Lindberg-Nylander-Hyman
Leipsic-S.Carrick-B.Smith
Clune-Gauthier-Soshnikov

Nielsen-Valiev
Percy-C.Carrick
Brennan-Holl

Frattin and Kapanen scratched. I'm sure we'll see a few players get rotated in and out for the rest of the regular season. Andrew Campbell and Leivo are hurt.

That's because the Solar Bears are done for the season; NCAA is done for some as well.

Here's the Marlies' best-of-5 playoff schedule against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers starting next weekend:

MHC-Round1Schedule-041716].jpg

Bridgeport finished with 87 points in 76 games, but were outscored 220 to 209.  The Marlies finished with an insane record of 54-16-5-1 for 114 points (12 points more than their closest rival), with 294 GF and 191 GA.

So the best record in the league gets you starting the playoffs on the road?  Interesting.

Sounds like they chose that path themselves. Start on the road, close out the series at home. (Source)
The unusual 2-3 set up is due to travel considerations, which Toronto encountered last season in the first round against Grand Rapids. The Marlies won the first two games at Ricoh before losing three straight on the road to the higher seeded Griffins.

Mirtle with an article today about the ways in which the financial resources of MLSE have helped the Marlies:

The Leafs have spent money to make the Marlies travel schedule less onerous. They?ve spent money to bring in top-end staff to develop and take care of their prospects. They?ve spent money on how they eat and how they train.

The players are treated well ? almost like NHLers ? and some now even make NHL-level money. Those perks have helped make the Marlies the most desirable place to play in the minor leagues.

It?s about as far from Slap Shot as you can get.

?It?s not like that at all,? Sam Carrick said. ?They put us up in nice hotels. We go a day early before games. They really do treat us like we?re an NHL team, and I think that?s a big advantage.?

?The bus rides are basically the only difference,? said teammate Brendan Leipsic, who had a taste of both worlds when he spent six games with the Leafs. ?We get treated really well here.?

And the bus? Even it has satellite TVs, he said.

What the Marlies players rave about, however, more than any other amenity, is the food. In an initiative brought in this year by GM Kyle Dubas, the team supplies a nutritionist-approved breakfast and lunch every day to the entire roster and staff, a big expense for a typical minor-league organization.

Players who have played in other AHL cities say they have never had this luxury before. It saves them time and considerable money and also ensures they get a diet fit for a pro athlete, which can be a challenge for young players on an entry-level salary (about $70,000).

Keefe, a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1999, recalled how his diet was filled with fast food when he was a 20-year-old trying to make the jump from junior to the pros. Not having a billet for the first time and living in a strange city on a tight budget with limited time to cook meals was a bad combination.

?It just makes a lot of sense at this level,? Keefe said. ?Players personally don?t have the same resources that NHLers do so we should take care of the guys here. They?re younger. They need development and nutrition more, in terms of adding weight and strength and all of that.?

Thanks for posting that Potvin. I posted it in Patrick's thread but then saw you had already done this after.

Look who's out of media purgatory!

Dubas is a (humble) genius.

He is in line to succeed Lou as the players he's been shepherding himself in the AHL/ECHL/junior are ready to succeed in the NHL.
