Marlies Talk

Banged up Marlies prepare for Calder Cup
Forwards Mike Zigomanis, Nazem Kadri and Matt Frattin and defencemen Jesse Blacker, Korbinian Holzer and Mark Fraser all skipped practice with various injuries while wingers Marcel Mueller and Carter Ashton skated, but not on the team?s top four lines.

Though Eakins said it was a good sign to have Ashton and Mueller at the rink, he wouldn?t give details of the injuries or a timeline for when anyone would return to the lineup.

?Right now, anybody that wasn?t on the ice is hurt and they?ll play when they?re healed,? he said.

Despite missing some of their top-six forwards, and their top shut-down defensive pair, an optimistic Eakins believes things could be a lot worse for Toronto.

?We?ve probably got four or five guys who are playing extremely hurt and for those guys not to pack it in is huge,? he said. ?I don?t know what we would do right now without the guys that are totally hurt, and off the ice, and the guys that are just hanging in there.?

Arguably Fraser & Holzer are their #1-2 guys - certainly in terms of shutting down the top offensive team in the league. So they're in worse shape than I thought.

If Frattin can't play and the other top 6 injured don't start Friday, this could get silly. Reminds me of the Leafs '02 playoff run. Guys came back but they weren't 100%.

seems like beyond awful luck that they'd be this banged up .considering that they only took two games more than the bare minimum to get here..you'd think less games in the playoffs would be associated with being healthier..especially considering the days off between rounds they were able to get

Damn... Scrivens now needs to chip in a few goals in addition to stopping them.

It's time for a new Miracle on Ice, because the Marlies are going to need it.

I was gonna wait to post this comment a bit later, but why bother?

It was a great run!! Even better than I expected. Only a small miracle could take them any further at this point I'm afraid. Frattin was key for any success in the final. :(

Mirtle just said Frattin is done, needs knee surgery. What a crappy way to end a season.

Yeah, I mean I'm guessing he blew his knee working hard to score that empty netter to solidify the Marlies going to the finals...so in that respect it's awesome...but not getting to play in the big games must sting a LOT. :(

If Scrivens can pull this off Reimer needs to go.

Seriously? That's ridiculous. As impressive as Scrivens' run has been, having a great AHL playoff run is no reason for the team to jettison a younger goalie who has actually had some NHL success. Scrivens has earned a chance to make the team next season, no doubt about that, but his good AHL playoff run is no reason to trade away any other goalie in the system.

Well, I think we're operating under the assumption Scrivens gets a one-way deal and then maybe one of them has to go to make room for what one would hope is something of an upgrade. So if that's the case, why not Reimer? Now if Scrivens takes a two-way deal then sure... Let's keep both around.
