Martin Brodeur...

It's an infinitely better option than Luongo

It sounds ridiculous but I think I would rather see Burke sign Marty for 2 years and $8 mil per than fork out for Luongo.

Better to blow $16 mil over two years than $50 mil and be stuck with it for 11 years.

that's not ridiculous, that makes great sense. The Leaf system only has prospects, so Marty would give a buffer to develop one of the young guys for prime time. Maybe Brodeur performs like Belfour did and wins some games.

He is old but he also just went to the cup finals so I'm ok to go with that as a barometer to say he still has it, for at least one more year.

...And now he works with his hero's trainer.. Yey!

Will this be like when people wrote off Rocky and then he was traded by Apollo's trainer and...where the hell am I  going with this.

I'd like to imagine how Gustavsson would of done with Brodeur as his mentor.  Not at all knowing the situation, but I get a feeling it's Alliare's way or the highway which didn't work for the Monster.

Here's Bergers perspective.  He emphasizes the stability that Brodeur would bring.

If Brodeur does test the market Burke should be all over him - who better to mentor Reimer and it keeps Scrivens away from the circus while he develops his chops. This might be the biggest no brainer out there.

Without a doubt.  Brodeur had a slow start last year and managed to pull it together well enough to carry his team all the way to the finals. If that isn't exactly what Reimer and pals need to have around, I don't know what is. Even if his numbers aren't as great as they once were, if that ability to pull your season out of the toilet isn't exactly what the Leafs need to have more of around then I don't know what is.

I'm genuinely curious, is there a basis for this outside of Brodeur being good and old? Maybe it's me but I don't think those two things necessarily add up to someone being a great mentor for a younger goalie. Most of what I've read about Brodeur is that he's kind of an aloof guy and his style of play is a little unorthodox. He may prove to be a heck of a guy around for Reimer's sake but, I don't know, it's not like Mike Dunham went on to greatness.

agreed. Guys like Giguere have a reputation for nurturing younger goalies, but I have never read of Brodeur acting in that fashion.

While I'm not sure he'd be much of an active mentor or anything, but, his presence would likely help to create some stability in net, provide a calming presence and take Reimer/Scrivens out of the spotlight for a season or two, therefore taking a little pressure off of their shoulders.

I'd be on board with that if I were particularly confident about his play in general. He's had SV %'s of .903 and .908 in the last two years. If he comes in and isn't terribly effective it could lead to another mess, especially if he needs to be benched and raises a stink.

I do not think Brodeur is what leafs need. Bernier from LA might be a great option and rumor has it that leafs would be a choice for him.

DarrenDreger: Leafs have plaved a call to Pat Brisson with interest in Martin Brodeur.  A simple inquiry..nothing more.

Just a shot in the dark here but...Edmonton?

They still have Khabibulin under contract as their veteran net presence. On top of that, I doubt Brodeur wants to play behind that defence.
