Mats Sundin: First-Ballot Hall of Famer!

The last goal he ever scored gave his team the lead in the 3rd period of a playoff game - I can't think of a more appropriate way for #13 to end his career.

Class act, terrific player; he really did make it seem so easy out there.

I recently found a Mats documentary (produced by the Leafs?) online if anyone is interested in checking it out:

Thanks for posting that, Beowulf.  I'll check it out when I have some free time.

Yeah I always knew I would miss him once he was gone.  I just didn't know how much.  I think it has been exacerbated by the fact that we've had such anemic talent on the Leafs ever since he left.

Kessel may score the goals but that only fills a small part of the void that was left by Sundin's departure.  The other parts being assists, leadership, durability, clutch performances, having imposing strength & size, being completely self-less and caring as much about team-mates scoring as himself.

I have met Mats on a few occasions and what struck me was, for the lack of a better word, how grandfatherly he seemed.  He almost had this ethereal, wise-beyond-his-years quality about him that seemed to help him rise above menial and irrelevant squabbles.

He may not have been the best ever, but overall I can't think of an equal.  Forsberg?  Too injury prone.  Lindros?  Ditto.  Bure?  Same.  Sakic?  Perhaps...but lacked size.  Federov?  Again, kinda small.

Sundin was the first reliable and durable superstar while still able to use a certain amount of physicality (not fighting) to enhance his game.  It will be a long time until we see another one like him.  If ever.

I can't wear my Sundin jersey any more because of all the tear stains.

WHY MATS WHY???  WHY GO TO VANCOUVER??? WHY MATS???

Okay...composure...composure.  We've been through this.  The dr. says just let it go.

Congrats Mats.  Always enjoyed watching the wrap around.  Also, that winning thing was kinda cool as well.

I'm as big a Sundin fan as there is around here - but if there was 1 player who in the same era I would have traded Sundin straight up for it was Sakic. That guy was a machine...

I don't necessarily disagree but I can't help but wonder if our perspective on that wouldn't be flipped if you had surrounded Sundin with talent comparable to what Sakic had to work with.
