Mats Sundin Tribute thread.....

mapleleafs.com is streaming the Sundin event from the real sports store right now.

Wish I could skip work and meet him. He was my childhood hero once Doug Gilmour left the team. How's the lineup?

Two of my favourites:

2002 Toronto @ Ottawa, Game 1 OT winner

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy7tjF0yrXk

2004 Toronto @ Ottawa, Game 3 2-0 goal late in the 3rd

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv9oAUTPIoc

Also the tying goal in game 6 2002 vs Carolina.

It was exciting when it occured, no doubt, but the fact that we were eliminated with a half hour or so kind of puts a damper on that one for me.

Might have been the best radio call of a goal in the last 50 years for the team though.

No doubt - Bowen could barely get the words out of his mouth and I completely lost it.  That was the most pumped up I ever felt watching a hockey game.

A lot of people said he wasn't a very tough player, but tough was relative, I suppose.

That's pretty funny.  Better than his chunky soup turns.

My favorite Mats Sundin moment is that Nike commercial where the punk on rollerblades is skating around while wearing a Sundin jersey and knocking people over on the sidewalk.  Right near the end of the commercial Sundin body checks his skinny ass into a storefront window.  All to the tune of "One Bad Apple" by the Jackson 5 (Sundin labels the kid at the line "sock it to you again").  Perfect commercial.

Oh and here it is:

By no means did Sundin hit all the time, but he was a LOT tougher than most people gave him credit for. He was my Fav Leaf of all time, probably the best Leaf of all time.

I don't what you are trying to prove. I didn't say he wasn't tough, just that he rarely threw a hit which is a correct observation.

Haha, that's the only Mats fight I've ever seen.  He had no idea what he was doing.

But I'll never forget how he leveled May.

I remember one game where Sundin had some sort of beef with Kenny Jonsson and he was hitting and punching him all throughout the game.  Sure Sundin wasn't a "hitter" but he was a big body and he COULD bodycheck and really hurt a guy when he wanted to.  I remember a lot of Sundin hits, he wasn't a soft player by any means.

You said he doesn't body check. I was only pointing out that he did. With a quick youtube search of 'Sundin hits', I found a few. That was all.

I miss Mats.  :'(

There hasn't been a player since he left that I've been even remotely close to having a similar emotional attachment to.

Me too. :'(  Even as much as I loved Mogilny, there was just something special for me about Mats.  I miss the big guy!

Can't wait to watch the ceremony and his jersey be raised.  Got my box of cleanex all ready to go because I'll be balling my eyes out! ;D

This is the tribute thread, what are you trying to prove?

Not a lot of Sundin in it but an old commercial that made me laugh...

I doubt that anyone else shares my favourite Mats Sundin moment.  It wasn't a milestone, like #500, as special as that was.

Four years ago today, February 9, 2008, I brought my daughter to her first Maple Leafs game.  There had been a few Marlies games masquerading as Leafs games, but this was the first real game.  She sent Mats a letter a few weeks earlier, and he sent her back a letter and signed 4x6 (same one every kid got, but she didn't care).  She had a favourite player, and was so excited when I told her that she got to see him play.

Mats tied the game in the third, then set up Antropov in OT for the winner.  Mats scored 500 more goals, many more memorable, and mny more spectacular, but that one stands out as my favourite.

As an aside, does anyone know if there will be anything going on outside the ACC Saturday?  Will they show the celebration outdoors fr those of us not fortunate enough to get tickets?  Will there be anything going on as part of Hockey Day In Canada?
