McDavid Extends in Edmonton: 2 years @ 12.5M AAV (!!!!)

I don't get McDavid giving them this sweetheart deal. Why not see how it goes this year and then decide? Or why not only 1 year extension to really put management's feet to the fire? LeBron would do 1 year at a time deals.

Because he's going to make like $200m over the course of his career, and giving up $10m to give yourself a better shot at a championship is worth the investment, and you can walk away with your head held high even if you don't win one...at least that's my opinion of why he might have done this.

Exactly. He desperately wants to win and this is the best way to do that. It's funny how Allan Walsh always says "Why should this or that player take less?" And I agree in principal but the reality is this type of deal really helps push not only the team's but Connor's Cup aspirations along.

I think he sees Matthews' contract is up in two years, and he's coming home. Matthews can chase $20M, and McDavid will cement himself as the best all-time, bringing the cup home to Toronto.
