Media Thread

So we're going through a tough injury situation with the forwards.
Meanwhile, some of the media is trying to trade away the goalie depth in the AHL.
If the two goalie prospects continue to do well along with Murray, trading Murray might be something to consider closer to the deadline.
Some of the chatter here seems premature - like they can't find anything of substance to talk about.

Ditto for the speculation on Marner's contract or Tavares' contract.
 
Trading our two younger goalies seems silly at this point. It's not a relevant move this year but Hildeby:Akhtyamov/Stolarz might be a relevant repeat of Sparks/McElhinney where the correct move might be moving the older goalie to create a roster spot for a younger guy ready for the NHL.

And, even trading Murray doesn't feel like the smartest move. Better to have a veteran as the #3 goalie in the playoffs and let the young guys run the show for a potential Marlies playoff run.

If one of the young goalies being moved brings back an equally young impact player, that's one thing. But, moving them for a rental should be an easy no.

The goalie trade that haunts me (and probably most) is Rask for Raycroft and keeping Pogge.
I'd be uneasy trading a young goalie now fearing trading the wrong one.
20+ games in is not enough time to get comfortable with Woll's physical reliability. That will probably take a couple of years or more.

Although the position is tough to predict, the five goalies they have in the NHL & AHL strike me as the finest depth collection of Leafs goalie talent the Leafs have ever had (on this basis: five goalies who probably wouldn't embarrass themselves playing in the NHL at some point). Are any of them up to being as good as Bower, Cujo, Belfour, etc? That remains to be seen. But when you've got five candidates, the cream usually rises to the top. With the unpredictability of the position, having five credible candidates is a heck of a lot better position than in recent years gone by.
 
Goalies don't have good return in trades because of the volatility of the position (even though it can swing a series on its own). I highly doubt we can land a prominent position prospect out of it, but if there are waiver issues coming up, then it makes some sense to just pick a horse and let him have some run. Peksa is probably the one we'd most likely want to trade but would yield the most nothing. I suspect Hildeby is the one that goes.

Maybe as an adder to something like Niemela/Villeneuve + Robertson + Hildeby for David Jiricek* + 3rd + 4th.
* Leafs reportedly kicked tires as Treliving does, but is not in the shortlist.

Significantly agree. It depends on what would be coming back. If Murray got them a decent 2 way center with some/a little term on a decent contract, I'd at least think about that one. If you're down to a #3 in the playoffs, you're not likely going to win a Cup anyway. So running out one of the kids in a #3 role doesn't seem so bad to me.

The prospect system has been decimated by rentals. They need to cut back on that.
 
The best goalie prospect in the world was traded for a top-10 protected 1st rounder this season. I like Hildeby and Akhtyamov both but they're still far from reputation. In the Athletics ranking of the top-20 goalie prospects this summer Hildeby was ranked 20th, Akhtyamov wasn't ranked. Surely both those rankings will probably change in a year but still, I doubt they carry a ton of value right now even with their starts to the season. I can't see trading either of them being worth it right now.
 
 
 
Millen was a mainstay on Leaf broadcasts for awhile. Teamed up with Joe Bowen a lot. Probably a better broadcaster than an NHL goalie.
