Sure, but this news has absolutely nothing to do with the Leafs, Liles or Komisarek or the gist of the article, other than "they're athletes like Pistorius".

And, hence, while he bases the early part of the column on the idea that they're good guys, he's distancing himself from that as a concrete statement because of something very relevant that's in the news these days.

Like it or not when discussing the character of athletes these days, it would be pretty shoddy work for a writer to not acknowledge the elephant in the room.

So I start to read Damian Cox's article today and I stop at this:

Damian Cox said:
Mike Komisarek and John-Michael Liles, to meet, are both friendly and courteous fellows. In this age of Oscar Pistorius and beyond, we dare not go further than that, although if requested, testimonials would be easily acquired on behalf of both men.

Really?  He brings in the story of the Olympic athlete now accused of murder into his Leaf article for what exactly?

There were a million other ways for him to make his point without making that reference.  Geez.

Yeah I thought it was a bit tasteless especially with it in the news right now.

He writes for a newspaper. Referencing things that are in the news is, you know, the job.

When I read it I also, you know, felt the same as you.

He's reaching Nik. He's gone for the zinger and essentially said(tongue in cheek), that Komisarek and Liles may be good guys but for all he knows, they may shoot their girlfriends 5 times.

Leave the tasteless jokes for the comedians Damien.....There were several different ways he could of gotten the point across without tying them to an accused murderer.

No, he didn't "essentially" say that. He did say that Komisarek and Liles may be good guys but as is often the case in his business those appearances can be deceiving and to drive the point home he referred to the most emphatic example of that being true that's in the news today.

Is it a blunt point? Absolutely. But when you're writing a column in a newspaper, which is still a consideration for Cox, sometimes blunt points are needed if they make the point with an economic use of words. I'm sure he felt he was on safe ground considering he's writing a sports column in a major metropolitan newspaper, where far blunter stories abound, and not a cravat review in Fainting Dandies Monthly.

Hey now, the FDM is an excellent journal and I am offended by your insinuation that it is anything else.

*faints*

No doubt. How else do you think I know about the cravat reviews.
