You might be on to something Nik -- and if Phaneuf gets dealt I think it'll all but confirm your hunch.

Still, even if you are rebuilding it's stunningly bad asset management to just jettison a valuable player like Grabovski and get nothing but cap space in return.  I cannot believe that somebody wouldn't have given us something in trade.

I'm sure Nonis could have gotten something back but I'm equally sure that what he could have gotten back is a contract another team didn't want. Otherwise you're asking me to believe that Nonis cost the team millions of dollars and refused an asset out of...what? Spite?

Lack of patience.

Actually, even taking back a contract somebody else didn't want might turn out to be an asset with a value greater than zero, depending on the circumstances.

This.

Or deference to a coach who thinks Bozak's unsustainable shooting percentage is something that can no only be repeated for the next 48 games but over the next season.

We may not even be bringing Bozak back - and even if we do we don't know the cost/term.

Or maybe he had a trade for Grabo, but the other team wanted us to retain some of Grabo's salary.

Nonis may be working on another deal for a center,  where whoever we send back, they want us to retain some salary from one of the players.

With how the rules are, you can only retain salary on 3 players and we are already doing that for Scrivens and Frattin. So maybe Grabo had to be bought out now at the last chance this off season, and so the Leafs have flexibility for an upcoming trade.

Who knows.  Hopefully we find out soon!

Assuming Nonis has a plan in place, patience was probably too risky. Today was the last day for putting him on waivers. Though I disagree that Grabovski should have been let go, if that was Nonis's ultimate plan, then he did the right thing. Get rid of him and move on.
