Just noticed now that it was their 2015 1st round pick the Blues gave up.

That's a bit different. It adds a greater element of risk to the deal.

Still a good deal though.

Still likely to be a late pick. With the talent on the team playing a Hitchcock system, that pick is all but guaranteed to be 20th or later.

I agree, it's not likely to come back to bite them.

TSNBobMcKenzie: BTW, I'm told the big STL-BUF trade is conditional on Miller and Halak each passing physicals with their new clubs.

BillHoppeNHL: #Sabres get a first-rounder in 2014 if the Blues reach the conference final or Ryan Miller re-signs w/St. Louis. #Buffalo

Man, they're going to own all the draft picks soon enough.

And, yet, somehow, they'll still manage to never become a serious Cup threat.

If this is the firesale that it looks like and Halak and Stewart both get moved as well as Ehrhoff, Moulson, and Tallinder, the 14/15 Sabres team is going to be one of the worst we've ever seen. And I really hope the lottery isn't kind to them if that happens.

I've always liked Halak. To be honest think Buffalo won this trade big time. St.Louis got hosed.

Halak really only has value to Buffalo if they trade him. Considering they're in full-on tear down and rebuild mode, they're not likely to re-sign him and he's unlikely to choose to remain in Buffalo.

The Sabres win 4-2 against San Jose despite getting outshot 38-20.  That gives them 3 wins in a row coming out of the Olympic break.

As an interesting sidenote, it'll be interesting to see if Buffalo is willing to trade Ehrhoff and risk getting hit with an enormous cap penalty if he retires before his contract expires.

Ehrhoff does have pretty good trade value but because of the new recapture penalty I don't know if it's worth the risk.

You'd have to get pretty damn good value to offset that risk. Doesn't matter where they trade him, they're still be on the hook for the massive penalty that gets incurred if he retires even one year early.

I think they are setting themselves up for McDavid.  They need a superstar to build around.  They could use the STL pick + other assets to trade up if they don't win the lottery.

If Buffalo doesn't win the lottery for McDavid, they're not getting McDavid. That pick will not be available, no matter how many other picks Buffalo has to throw at the team that gets it.

Could he re-sign with St. Louis after the draft but before free agency?

Buffalo will draft McDavid, McDavid will refuse to play for Buffalo, Philly will trade all their good players to get McDavid, Buffalo will win the Cup.

Not sure why the possibility of Ehroff retiring early would factor into any decision?  It would have the same consequence if he retired while playing for Sabres.

The amount of the penalty the Sabres get saddled with changes if they trade him and he continues to play a few before retiring mid-contract.

In theory, sure. Though, being that the draft is on the 27th and 28th of June and Free Agency opens on July 1st, it would feel pretty suspect if that happened.

Ahhh didn't even check the date, thought it was earlier than that.  Forgot about the different schedule because of the Olympics - it's usually a bit earlier right?

That makes sense then.

Even still, suspect smushpect. Who cares? Deals get done in the minutes before free agency starts all the time. I wonder if Buffalo built in a clause for that. Maybe they get the 2015 and 2016 1sts instead.
