Just under Kadri's deal. And well under Tom Wilson's. (more UFA years on those two)

If he ever actually reaches the potential people think he has, that's a great contract.

Ehhh, that contract is pretty stunning to me. I get he's got more potential but he's essentially scored at the same rate as Connor Brown has in their first two seasons. This seems like a good situation to try for a 2-3 year bridge deal. Even if he reaches his peak (which I'd guess to be around 50 points) I doubt he gets substantially more than $4.45mil after that.

After a rough sophomore season Larkin bounced back and recorded 63 points this past season. So based off that performance that seems like a pretty good cap hit for him.

Could help keep Nylander's cap hit below $7mil as well, since even though he's done it 2 years in a row his career high in points is a shade lower (61).

Awesome cap hit. Thank you Detroit for getting this deal done. Great comparison for Nylander. Hopefully we sign Nylander for a similar cap hit but longer term.

If they want to sign him for a similar term, sure.

Although at this point I'm sort of warming to that idea.

I'd be comfortable going 6 years. These are his peers now from his draft year:

Larkin $6.1mil AAV x 5
Ehlers $6mil AAV x 7
Pastrnak $6.66mil AAV x 6

To me the Larkin contract also shows that the $6mil-ish mark set by guys like Forsberg, Barkov, Scheifele, Monahan hasn't really changed much in the past few years despite the cap going up.

No lockout signing bonus for Larkin, although his salary does dip that season. That's of course something that the Leafs should be using to their advantage in their talks.

Comfortable as in you wouldn't want to go lower or comfortable as in you wouldn't want to go higher?

I've said this before but I really think the question for Nylander will be to what extent he wants to let Babcock's decisions re: his play influence his pay.

I used to be in the "sign them all for 8 years!" camp, but I've come down to 6 probably being the sweet spot. Especially now that it's clear Nylander will be staying a winger. Just not sure it'll be worth it to pay a premium to get those extra 2 years. If you can save say $1.5mil on both Nylander and Marner by going 6 instead of 8 I probably do that and invest the money into the D. I'd consider going down to even 5 but it'd have to be one heck of a team-friendly contract.

6 years is still a long time for a contract. Who knows what the cap landscape is going to look like in 2024/2025.

Not directly related to this discussion but I was looking at other players who have received 8-year contracts and the list of defencemen who got that much term since 2016 is pretty funny:

Ekblad, Hedman, Vlasic, Fowler, Carlson, OEL, Doughty... and Michael Matheson.

I've always thought a $6.5m aav was fair for Nylander. If he wanted more money he should have put up more points.

Right now Willie is on par with Ehlers and not as good as Pasternak.

Give him the bonus/lockout protection structure to his contract.

We're getting a little off topic here but I still think you're assuming way more team control than exists in this situation.

The Tavares contract salary structure is awesome, lockout protection and time value of $. Tax smax.

You could be right, but I have a feeling there's a bit of pull that the team has here out of the three of them. First being that they are sitting currently on a pretty optimistic situation going forward in terms of success, and that they have significant depth on the young hotshot "must sign" list. If the leafs only had Nylander without the other two in the fold, and he'd performed similarly to this point, he'd completely be in the driver's seat.

If I was Nylander's camp, obviously I'd like a good deal, but he's publicly said he'd prefer a long term deal, and unless he doesn't mind moving on after a bridge, I think there has to be some wiggle room.
