Morgan Rielly

Am I missing something? I've heard a few times now that the Leafs have "2 more games before 9 to decide on Morgan Rielly", but Rielly has only played 5 games not 7 like the rest of the team.

Some of the media that cover the Leafs (if that's where you're reading it) aren't exactly known for their adherence to "facts" in their jobs.

It's quite embarrassing.  I can understand one person making the mistake, but i've heard it now a few times.

Lazy reporting is all. One guy messed up and wrote it. The rest of them get their news by reading eachothers columns.

Glad he's staying up. I think back to Kaberle, Markov, Yushkevich and how those guys were pretty rough around the edges when they first started as pros. Even getting lambasted in the media (Cherry loved to pick on Yushkevich) but they evolved nicely into good NHLers.

Yup. Agreed. He should stay. Basing it on economics is ridiculous. The kid os the real deal, and appears to learn fast. Thats what we need. This makes him a tremendous asset at the very least. The kid can play, so he should. As simple as I can say it.

Article using Calgary's rookie Sean Monahan as the example, but could easily pertain to others such as the Leafs Morgan Reilly, on keeping, or sending rookies back to junior or the AHL...

By keeping young, talented players out of the American League, the NHL not only has a partner willing to develop its players for free, but it also avoids having to burn years off a player?s entry-level contract for the purposes of free agency.

In an equitable world, the NHL would tell the CHL that once a player is signed to a professional contract, the new employer, not the old one, makes the decision concerning that player?s development path. That?s what people such as Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford wants to do when it comes to first-round picks who have played three years of junior hockey.

...what would be best at this point for Monahan?s development? 1. Staying in Calgary to avoid going back to junior hockey and pla
ying for a losing team? 2. Going back to the Ottawa 67s where he?ll dominate and possibly pick up some bad habits? 3. Going to the AHL and learning how to be a pro playing against men.

Guys who are drafted out of Europe, though, once the team signs them to a contract, it has full control over where that player plays. And players such as Matteau and Sieloff, who were drafted out of the U.S. National Team Development Program, then played major junior hockey, well it?s just fine for them to play in the AHL without having to be returned to junior.

How does that make sense?

...they have until 40 games into the season to decide what to do with him for purposes of using up a year when it comes to free agency...the 40-game stipulation is for games on the team?s roster, not just games played....if Monahan plays 15 games then gets his Achilles tendon severed or gets drilled into the boards and has a season-ending concussion, all the games he spends on the injured list will stand as accrued games, meaning the Flames will have blown both a year on his contract and a year toward free agency.

There has been a lot of debate over whether players such as Monahan, Maatta, Dumba and Rielly should be sent back to junior hockey this season.

...there has never been a player in the history of hockey whose career was ruined by being brought along too slowly...Only time will tell what effect the handling of those players will have on their careers long-term.

One more game to work with before making a decision on Rielly.  He's been good enough to stay for the entire season, but Fraser soon coming back throws a wrinkle.  A move could be made, but it's unlikely to come together that quickly.  The more I watch, the more I would be inclined to make Ranger the odd man out.  Whether that means carrying 7 D and pressboxing one of them (Ranger move often than not), or trying to send Ranger down which would expose him to waivers (and likely gets claimed).

I thought Ranger was very steady last night and is improving every game...I would rather put Frasier on waivers, its no secret I am not a fan....at all.

I wasn't a fan but it does seem like he brings something to the table we've been missing. That being an actual stay at home defenseman.  It seems like all but Dion has been borderline awful and Dion's just getting a passing grade.

As a point of reference I give the D a "D" so far this year. Horribly confused in their own end.

What games have you been watching?

Yeah, Phaneuf has been everything we could possibly expect from him, except maybe Carlyle, as he seems to think Dion has more to give. I think this is the best Phaneuf has played for the Leafs in a long stretch of games.

I think Dion has been playing his best games as a Leaf this year. For aguy playing against the top talent he leads the team with a +5 and has been much better in his own end. Maybe a contract year has helped him concentrate but I have loved his game

Yes, and he doesn't need to score a ton of goals, but I believe the goals he has scored this year, have all been very timely goals.

I'd have to agree, and this coming from someone who has been critical of Dion in the past. He's been the best d-man on the team through the first 10 games.

Not to mention that his leadership qualities translate to the world of online message boards as he changed the "tune" of this thread from Rielly to himself  8)

I thought this tweet was telling:

Last three Phaneuf games: Staal, Semin, Kane, Toews, Hossa, Perry, and Getzlaf have combined for one goal.

Very solid game last night.

I would hope that he plays like the best d-man on the team...he makes more than Franson, Fraser, Reilly, Gardiner, and Ranger combined.

It's an extremely tough decision on Reilly. I won't fault them if he gets sent down, but I think he deserves to stay up and be given further opportunity at the NHL level.

I'd keep Ranger over Fraser. I think he's getting better and as a bonus he has a smaller cap hit than Fraser.

Maybe the Leafs defensemen were not taught how to play proper defense in a long time.  I know that the team may not have had quality players, but the team finished in the bottom 10 defensively for too long a time.  I believe RC can get the d-men going and will improve as the season progresses.

As for what should be done when Fraser returns, Gardiner and Ranger both need to improve, but I would keep all 7 d-men, sitting a couple of them out rotationally.  I would hate to see the team get decimated with injuries with no decent call-ups available.

That definitely wouldn't be the case this year. Even if we sent Rielly back or lost a Fraser or Ranger. The team still has Liles in the AHL and he's a legit NHL defenceman. Brennan has NHL experience. Same with Holzer. That brings us to 10 NHL defencemen in the organization. Plus any one of Percy, MacWilliam, Granberg, or Blacker could come up and probably play a bottom pairing role for us on a temporary basis without looking too out of place. This is easily the deepest blue line we've had in years.
