I love blowing up the Leafs but I am not sure that Kessel is the right guy to target. He is a pure goal scorer and are hard to find. If Kessel was simply a piece of the team (like Chicago's Kane) then it would be great.
Using Kane as an example, next year Kane will have a $10.5 MIL cap hit compared to Kessel's $8.0 MIL.
Kane and Kessel's production the last 4 seasons:
14/15 43 ga 47 pts 45 ga 43 pts
13/14 69 ga 69 pts 82 ga 80 PTAs
12/13 47 ga 55 pts 48 ga 52 pts
11/12 82 ga 66 pts 82 ga 82 pts
For the money vs production, I don't think that Kessel is the problem
I think that the problem is that the Leafs don't have a Toews, Kopitar, etc.
Who I am not convinced of is Phaneuf and Clarkson. I also think Reimer is making too much money to be only an occasional backup. I think that Gardiner is going to be left behind by Rielly and I think that Franson will command a lot of money for a big, slow RH dman that has good offensive instincts. I really, really like Lupul but think that he is hurt too often to be the asset he should be with his level of skill. I also think that it would be ok if Bozak got traded. The assets I would move would be:
Reimer 1 yr $2.3 (NYI, DAL), Phaneuf 6 yr $7.0 (EDM), Gardiner 4 yr $4.05 (WPG), Franson UFA (MTL), Clarkson 5 yr $5.25 (EDM) , Lupul 3 yr $5.25 (CGY, DET,VAN), Bozak 3 yr $4.2 (??).
I don't know what the Leafs could get and from who but I had my suggestions.
