Good memory but not perfect... THAT cop's sense of entitlement had as much to do with what bothered me then anything but anyhooo I can't say a blame Nolan for tyring and yes, absolutely I'd have at least looked in to it. Seems just the responsible thing to do anyway.

But you do see how it could be viewed as greed?

Sure... Doesn't mean I'd boo him for that though.

You asked "Why would one boo Nolan?"

That is one reason, you may not agree with it, but I know for sure there are lots who do share this view and would boo him for it.

I enjoyed fandom a lot more back in the old days when boos were a result of poor play as opposed to personal, legal, or financial B.S.  :-\

Do you enjoy booing just because it's Alfredsson?  Just curious.  :)

:)

I didn't care for the Nolan trade at the time - not because he was a lousy player but because I'd hoped they would build up from youth. I was greatly outnumbered. That may be the best received trade at the time of the deal (prior to Berrger's 'backgate')  of any Leafs deal I can recall though the Gilmour deal had plenty of discussion for obvious reasons.

As a player, I'm left with the feeling that he didn't quite achieve his potential. But while he was a Leaf, there were a few games when he delivered one of the most complete games I've seen any Leaf forward deliver. He could skate, hit, score, set players up, fight, protect little guys like Stajan, play defence, PK and win puck battles, and even call the Sens out with "boo hoo"  :), etc. He truly was capable of doing it all. He just didn't do it enough.

I really can't understand why fans would boo a player for trying to get money. It's not like he posted youtube videos of himself punching kittens.

Using the "he's already made $40M" argument is weak. No sure how that has any bearing on anything.

I personally wouldn't boo Nolan over this, but I'm not much of a boo-er.

I was just suggesting a reason he might get booed, I knew that whole situation left some fans bitter.

It's been a while so the memory may be foggy, but I thought he got a bit of a raw deal.  Quinn went through all that effort to get him and then used him primarily on the 3rd line.  I could never figure that one out.  If I recall correctly, he wasn't given the same time on the PP as he was given on the Sharks either.  I think that is where he got a lot of his points (one of the league leaders at the time?)

I always wondered what Quinn's rationale was at the time for utilizing him the way he did.

I was happy when we got him, but I remember thinking at the time that the price was overly steep.

Wasn't it like 2 games after he chirped a team for being sick that he blew his knee?

:P

No, it wasn't. But we have some lovely parting gifts for you.

I'm not much of a booer either. If I was, it would be for on-ice antics though, rather than someone trying to earn some extra money (whether they need it or not.)

Closer to two months. And Toronto went on to win the game when he was injured ..  ;)

My feeling is, a club should either be rebuilding or winning the Cup.  Anything in-between is a waste of time.  I think Nolan falls into the potential winning category, while the players they gave up had a certain ceiling that would never take them all the way.

I don't know that there's a huge point to booing anyone for any real reason. I get it as sort of a spontaneous reaction to poor play but other than that it tends to strike me as petty.

That said, I certainly understand why a fan would not be thrilled with Nolan. His play was inconsistent and the trade was lousy.

Seriously. McCauley alone gave the Sharks more value than Nolan gave the Leafs.

Well, since this looks like it could be the end of the line for him, for old time's sake I've gone to the wayback machine and pulled this out of the archives from December 2003 (the injury referred to was not when he blew out his knee on that rut behind the net):

A PRAYER FOR OWEN

O Owen! thou wert heaven-sent,
But now you?re gone, hence this lament.
Barney?s ugly, grinning mug you tuned
Whilst Belak and Tie Domi swooned.
You pummeled Webb, that gutless puke, and
Made magic with Faire Harolde Druken.

Dear God, I?ll gladly give up sex, or
Even beer!  Just fix his flexor!
My Lord, please lift your Curse of Doom
And let him come back when flowers bloom,
To once more fly down the wing, and smack it
Top shelf, Game Seven, past Esche or Hackett.
