Panarin signs for 7 years $11.6 but that's not good enough for Marner?

He's more than welcome to sign an offer sheet like that.
Yep, instant match.
Nobody is signing him to that sheet. Nobody would give up 4 1sts and pay that kind of cash. Well never say never I guess but I'd be shocked.

For 7 years Leafs would match that. They just don't want that number on 5 years like Auston

He seems closer to the Kapanen level (albeit above) than the Rantanen, Marner, Aho, Point tiers.

Or, and hear me out a second, RFA's are underpaid.
Usually tho the high end UFA's have been putting up great numbers gor more years. Panarin has put up good numbers for 4 years now. Marner, for example just 1.

Wait a minute. It's almost like you're saying that RFAs and UFAs are both..........FAs?

Which actually means they're older and less likely to maintain that production on long term deals. In any contract (whether professional sports or otherwise), you're paying for the production that you expect. You're not paying for past production. Past results will obviously inform your projections of the player's value over the contract, but that's about it.

I was mainly just joking but I think it's fairly undeniable that if RFA's weren't subject to compensation an on an open market that they'd probably get paid more than they do(and, consequently, UFAs would then get paid less)

I agree. Just the way it ks right now. If they lowered compensation there would be all kinfsof offers.
