Panthers @ Leafs - Oct. 27th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

I don't think Martin's been terrible or anything but he hasn't exactly been the wrecking ball of perpetual motion he was sold as either. He just looks like an ok 4th liner which, while nice, isn't exactly multi-year deal territory.

Yeah. He's basically been the type of guy you can usually get on cheap one year deals every summer. He's overpaid and signed for too long, but he's not a detriment on the ice. He's just not really much of a positive, either.

Komarov and Martin are 5th and 6th in the league in hits. I don't really think either have been all that physical though this season.

I've always felt that way about Komarov though. I tend to be a quality over quantity guy when it comes to hits.

I think that applies league-wide basically. Hits always tend to be over-counted, especially with guys who have a reputation for getting lots of hits.

I wonder if, at least in Martin's case, it is partly by design?  With NYI he was with Clutterbuck and they could both sort of be freight trains on the loose.  I guess it's possible the Leafs don't want him being quite so reckless out there?  Though then you would wonder why he was brought in.  Maybe just to have that potential to ramp up the physicality if needed.

I think I've seen him out there a few times on the PK and actually have thought he looked pretty good on it.

He tried to goad Petrovic into confrontation a couple of times after the D-man smushed Marner. Other than that, he skated the puck up the ice (straight) with regularity and helped keep it hemmed in the OZ for a small stretch with zero threat to score.

I don't hate him. He's just in the way of better options.

He does have some penalty killing in his history so if he can be a contributor there that would go a ways to his earning a spot.

Our defense wasn't that good last night, and Andersen actually did bail them out on several occasions.

The intermission crew pointed this out, but it looks like the Leafs are still thinking a lot about their defensive positioning, and it's using up their CPU threads in lieu of things like checking their man. That should iron out once positioning is more ingrained as a flexible structure, and then they can pay more attention and adjust to the incoming attack.

Who do you mean?

Leivo, Leipsic, Soshnikov... I might even throw Colins Greening or Smith into that list.

Oh, Rychel maybe.

I think Soshnikov is a top 6 guy and at worse top 9 guy.  He has too much offensive ability to put on the 4th line.  I could agree with maybe Rychel but let's not forget, we need Martin's physicality in the lineup to do just what he did last night for Marner.  No one else except Polak brings that and do we really want one of our 6 d-men doing that and sitting in the box?  Especially when he's one of our PK guys?

I'm ok with Martin for now.

I do hope the Leafs bring up Soshnikov soon.  I thought he was really good at the end of last season.  He could slot right into Kadri's line and pushing Komarov onto the 4th line.  That'd be a really good 4th line with say Ben Smith in the middle.

Speaking of Ben Smith, I really like his game.  He hustles and hits.  He skates harder than Holland.

I also really liked the vision of Seth Griffith.  I think he is not a 4th line guy and could probably offer more on a scoring line.

Right now the 4th line is getting enough minutes that I don't think this really applies.

What did he actually do though?

He went after Petrovic.  He doesn't have to fight but as long as he puts it into the opposing team's head not to mess with our star guys, that's enough.  It's not always what you do.  Also, he goes out and bangs people a lot.

But, Petrovic DID got after one of our star guys.
