Is this still a possibility?  I thought Shanahan threw water over this rumor when he came out in an interview saying he looked forward to helping Dion and surrounding him with more leaders etc.

He did, but, at the same time, those are things you kind of have to say if you're not 100% you're going to be able to trade a player. It may be an indication that Shanny doesn't want Phaneuf traded, but, it could also be meaningless lip service.

Exactly, also posturing for value of the asset as well..."Phaneuf is a fantastic player, incredibly difficult to replace, big minute guy and leader, etc..."
