But whether he gets $8.5M or $6.5M or somewhere in between is important, if nothing else in terms of cap.

Sure, but, the realistic difference that we'd see is more like the difference between whether he gets $7.5M or $7.75M.

Yeah, I'm firmly in this camp also. He isn't getting what Perry got, but he'll likely get a bit more than Stamkos, as Nik says, he's pending UFA as opposed to RFA (explained above).
.
It's more realistic to predict a potential difference of $250k than $2M?  Seems backwards to me.

Anyway, the cap is the cap, and comparables are always subject to interpretation.

Given the time frame we're looking at, absolutely. The less time, the less impact it's going to make on the outcome. The only way you're going to see a $2M difference is if Kessel basically tanks the entire season and the Leafs wait until after their season is over to start negotiating with him.

That and I think the comparable contracts are there, so you just kind of see where he is going to fall, or where he should. He's not getting less than 7 million a year AAV.

If we're talking UFAs, one has to say Weiss, no?

I think it's re-sign Bozak, or get one through trade. I'm not sure about Weiss and whether he'd be that much of an upgrade on Bozak, with a higher price tag, ignoring what Bozak wants.

Patrice Bergeron just re-signed as a pending UFA for 8 years, $6.5 per year as one of the top forwards in the NHL.

C'mon Kessel....sign for $6.5 for 8 years as well so that the Leafs can ice a competitive team.

Is that why Bergeron signed for $6.5 or maybe he needs a better agent?

Boston also signed Iginla for $6 and Rask for $7 so clearly you can pay prime time money for guys either way.

Agreed! Steve Ott's going to UFA, and he's gonna want to get PAID.

Which contract do you think that Ott would receive more money on?  A RFA one or a UFA one?  Just curious.

I really think so.  Kind of like the Sedins and Kane/Toews.

I will proclaim he is a classy guy.  It's not like he is Seguin!  ;D

No idea. Point was Nonis is Moneyballing PIMs now. His agent should get in touch.

I think Kessel's probably in the $7-8 million range right now. After the season he just had, he can definitely command that much.

Sorry, am I missing something?  Bergeron gave Boston a discount at $6.5 / 8 years?  Bergeron is great and all that, but I think he got a pretty darn good contract and likely didn't take much less than he could have earned on the open market.

In regards to Kessel, we should be pleading that he takes $7.5 / year, instead of the $8.5-$9.0 that he'll likely receive as a UFA.

I think $7.5 mil would be fair for Kessel and the team. He's battled cancer at a young age, put up with all the crap throw at him, kept a humble attitude, improved his two-way game, been durable and definitely thrown consistent numbers on the board. Not much to complain about...

i think it's a lock at this point that Kessel signs an extension.  assuming he keeps playing the way he has been the last two seasons, i'm guessing he'll sign before Christmas.  7 - 8 years, for at least $7M a season.
