TWO SECOND ROUNDERS HAHA

Negligible disappointment at waiting 1-2 years for the picks, but wow, two 2nd rounders.  I'm down with that.

I've watched so little Leafs hockey this year that I literally have no idea what outgoing Nick Spaling or Shawn Matthias look like.

Every pick counts I guess, more for the future cupboards or more chips to play in any trade if they want to acquire a propsect right now.

I mean...two 2nd round picks seems like a great return but '17 and '18?

The Leafs have so many picks already in 2016 (plus another potentially coming for Parenteau) that I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely did this. Start loading up on future drafts since in the next couple of years they might not have as much trade bait to peddle.

And considering that Polak's value was a 2nd/3rd on his own and Spaling for all rights and purposes shouldn't have had any value at all I really can't complain about the dates on the picks. You could say it was Polak for a 2017 2nd and Spaling for a 2018 2nd.

YES!

That is a phenomenal return.  Yes they are picks from the future but part of being a good team is continuing to stockpile into the future too.  It doesn't do the team any good to have a massive influx of players in 2016 and then have them all pass out of their entry level deals at the same time.  You need that constant flow into the system to keep ahead of the cap.

Also it is good that the Leafs don't have to infect the AHL team with Torres.

Also cool that this is the 3rd straight Leafs trade that wasn't initially reported by an "insider". I believe the sens twitter account broke the Dion deal (that was nice of Lou to let them do that) and @LeafsPR broke both this and the Matthias trade.

Look, I 100% agree that I am looking a pretty great gift horse in the mouth here and what you're saying makes a lot of sense and maybe there's a case to be made here that the team doesn't love this draft.

But...

I can't help but look at Florida's 2010 draft and think that's the sort of thing the Leafs need right now. Yeah, the Leafs have a bunch of picks but 7 of the 12 they have are in the 4th round or later.

Aside from the beautiful return, this is my favourite part.

I hear what you're saying and I like this new "code of silence" approach by the Leafs, but to be fair, trading these guys for picks isn't exactly the kind of trade that would have the rumor mills churning to begin with.  No big names involved, and they were pretty much expected to be dealt.  Not like an "insider" is going to be snooping around to see which team is offering up a draft pick for the likes of Polak and Spaling.

This also moved out two of the more prominent penalty killers on the team.  Not that the 20th ranked PK is something to boast about but it's certainly not going to help it.

Man I really hope Hunter's scouting team is up the task.  The future of this organization rests in their hands.  Leafs can't have a pathetic drafting record any longer, this team needs to hit on a number of picks.

In fairness, I think the idea that the Leafs have ever had a "terrible" drafting record doesn't hold up too well provided we're not talking about ancient history. They've been good at finding real NHL players in later rounds. Not superstars, no, but the team's real failings haven't been on draft day.

That's fair. I guess the thing is, could the Leafs have traded Polak for a 2nd rounder this year? Yeah, I think they definitely could have. Could they have traded Spaling in a separate deal to even kind of make up the gap in value between the two trades separately and this one? Not a chance.

Also, and I admit this is stretching things to find extra positives, the Sharks are a pretty old team right now. There's a decent chance they're not very good in the 2017-18 season and maybe that's a fairly high 2nd rounder coming our way.

I am weeping with joy at the last three Leaf trades.

TSN is weeping with despair as Lou is on pace to leave their Trade Deadline panel with nothing else to talk about for the entire day.

It's trade deadline time and anything Leafs-related is huge news for guys like Dreger and Kypreos. I'm sure they're constantly checking in to see what's going on in Leaf-land. Even minor deals used to constantly get broken by TSN/Sportsnet long before the Leafs official channels announced it.
