Potential Buyouts

I think he should at least attempt a grievance. By being denied the opportunity to play, it's possible they are diminishing his future chances at employment.

I'd at least try if I was him.

And plus it would cause some turmoil around the Habs, which ultimately is why I brought this up, my hope that they are somehow screwed over by this.

If I were him, I would as well. I just don't think it will get him very far.

8. Gomez grievance? Had a few questions about it and, if you're the agent (in this case, Ian Pulver), maybe you pursue it to show the client you are trying. But just like the Montreal Canadiens did with Georges Laraque, history says you can send a guy home as long as you pay what's owed.

What's the exact thing they did with Gomez?  They told him he can't play?  I don't understand, what if he wants to play?  Doesn't he have a grievance he can file, he's under contract, has a no-movement clause or something, how can they tell him "sorry you can't play"?

They've basically made him a healthy scratch for the entire season, which, as long as they still pay him and give him access to the team's facilities, is all they need to do to honour his contract.

I dunno....  What they've done is enjoined him from following his profession, and preemptively, without giving him the same chance as every other similar employee in the organization.  I think there's a grievance or a lawsuit here.

TSNBobMcKenzie: So, as others reported, Gomez and Redden and any player for that matter can get an "accelerated compliance buyout" before Saturday's opener

FriedgeHNIC: All teams will have option of using a compliance buyout now, as reported by @RealKyper. Catch is, for this season only, cap hit stays.

This is good news for those players who would instead sit out all year. But, how is this legal?
Can they just randomly change the buyout rules cause they feel like it? Doesn't there have to be a vote or something legal done to make this happen?

Interesting. Do the Leafs buy out anyone prior to Saturdays opener??

Unless his contract stipulates he has to play, Montreal can do whatever they want with him, as long as he gets his money.

Connolly? Komisarek? Lombardi?

There's no cap advantage to doing this with Connolly or Lombardi since their contracts end this season.

There is no monetary benefit to doing it now anyway. Wait until the season is over for Komisarek.

The League and PA negotiated this together, and since it doesn't really change the spirit of the buy-outs, it's not a big deal.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Each team is still permitted only 2 compliance buyouts, either before Saturday or in summers of 2013 or 2014.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Sorry, my mistake on this year, player gets 100 per cent on buyout, not two thirds. No saving to club. My bad.

TSNBobMcKenzie: So ultimately, there's no actual benefit to team to do "accelerated compliance buyout" other than as favor to the player to seek work now.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Or you know the player can't get hurt and scuttle summer buyout, but Gomez and Redden couldn't get hurt if they weren't playing anyway.

These 2 guys are (Lombardi & Connolly) I think have something to prove in their contact year. If it was me, I'd have them both playing over Frattin and Kadri and see what they can produce, if they both falter, then what's the big deal, they are off the books in less than 6 months.

Mac-Bozak-Lombardi
Komarov-Steckel-McClement
Orr-Brown

Phaneuf-Gunner
Liles-Komi
Franson-Frazer
Holzer (Gardiner - IR)

Reimer-Scrivens (I think I would possibly start Scrivens on Saturday too)

Sorry, I may have just put my speculating line-up in here, lol.

I'll admit, I'm intrigued with the thought of Gomez in a Leaf uniform trying his best to stick it to the Habs for 5 games this year. - On the cheap of course.
