Potential Buyouts

There isn't a contract on the team that makes more sense to be bought out as a compliance buy out than Komisarek's $4.5M healthy scratch.

Liles at 3.875M and has 3 years left after this year is looking more of a buyout option to me, especially if Gardiner gets back and is healthy.  Also if Grabovksi doesn't pick it up do you really want to pay him $5.5M for another 4 seasons?  His returns might get worse year after year.

They have the option of a compliance buyout which gets them some cap space for the next two seasons that they wouldn't otherwise have ... and they have 12 RFA/UFAs to sign this summer and only four guys signed for the season after that.

Such a buyout would be much more expensive in terms of dollars which has to be a concern to MLSE at some point.

Are you thinking Liles...or Grabbo?  Can't believe it's only the 1st year of 4 on Liles contract, what a lemon that looks like, what did Burke see there?  Grabbo at least brings 'dat fire' on some nights and might be able to turn it around and earn a good chunk of that 5.5M, but 4.25M for Liles is nuts.

Just looking at next year Komi is the clearly the deadest weight though.

To be fair, he's only been scratched twice so far and still has trade value. 3 seasons at less than $4M per isn't so bad that no one will take a chance on him - and, I don't think he's been that bad, either.

Komisarek's contract only has 1 year left so you're just carrying that salary one more season.

My point is if you want to free up salary for players not living up to their contracts, you should look at guys on multiple years left and not Komisarek with only one.  He can still play even though he's not worth 4.5M, it's just one year to eat.

The way the rest of the D is playing, unless there is a trade in the works I think it's Liles and Komi that should probably get the heave-ho.  We'd finally be clear of all Burke's terrible expensive signings on D.

Do they have the stomach to pay off Liles just one year in?  Who knows, but I would think Nonis would look really hard for a trade partner first.

It's $3.975M, and based on how he was playing before he got hurt last year and how he performed for the rest of his career leading up to that moment, it was a perfectly reasonable deal.

My point is if you want to free up salary for players not living up to their contracts, you should look at guys on multiple years left and not Komisarek with only one.  He can still play even though he's not worth 4.5M, it's just one year to eat.

It may jsut be one more year to eat, but, what are the opportunity costs of holding on to that cap hit for an extra year when it could have been removed without penalty?

I've addressed Liles in other posts, but even considering Grabovski at this point is nuts, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, he's had a slow start, but, it's not he's being paid based off one good season. He's still a quality offensive centre - something that is hard to find - and he's still relatively young.

Sure, but he's only been there for a couple games. Let's wait until it becomes a longer term, more regular thing before we start using that as a reason to buy him out.

Which is true as a sort of guiding principle but doesn't apply to the Leafs in most people's eyes. Even if Grabo has a lousy year I wouldn't want to give up on him after one year and Liles, as busta says, has value.

What about just a regular buyout for Komi?  Cap geek says the hit would be 2.167M for 2013-2014 and 1.167M for 2014-2015.  Still a cap savings of 2.333M right away to make room.

Still unless we have two other candidates/targets for compliance buyouts why not use one on him.

Depends on what you can accomplish in the off season and the development of Kadri.  If Kadri can become the #2 center it makes Grabovski expendable.  Grabs is 29, sure not old but also not at an age where players suddenly start to improve.  His best season is 58 points and he may never hit that again.  If they can sign Getzlaf as their #1, Kadri slots into #2 and Bozak is #3.

Exactly. The compliance buyout is for a guy with a bad contract and no trade value. Outside of Komisarek the Leafs just don't have anyone who qualifies.
