Predators vs. Maple Leafs - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - SN, Fan 590

Ahhhh Marner….what a conundrum. Regular season marvel……if he cranks
It up this playoffs what is he going to demand…

I missed this game. Oh hey, the big guns kicked into gear after trailing against a sad sack team? Marner still in November mode? Knies gifting Willy another tap in on the PP?

And he's disrupting their breakout with forechecking and making defensive plays at center ice ... monster period for our MVP thus far this season.
The thing that agitates me some is he's been doing this for years and it has not been fully appreciated.
You don't see it all in his scoring stats but ...

Marner's place in Selke Voting
2018-19 14th
2019-20 33rd
2020-21 10th
2021-22 16th
2022-23 3rd (finalist)
2023-24 17th

Off hand, I can't think of a Leafs forward with that sort of quality consistent record in Selke voting.
It has only been around since 1977. Gilmour wasn't around as a Leaf long enough but won it in '92-93
Keon would have had a better/longer record if the trophy had been around during his years.
Point is: what he is doing at both ends of the ice is pretty special relative to the history of the franchise.
The media pooped all over him last summer.

Marner is on pace for 88 assists, I say he does it

He's on pace for 118 points. If he can stay healthy, he should crack the century mark.
He's 8th in league scoring since he came into the league. Another 'ho hum' season.
His agent is probably checking out Lamborghinis ...

Leafs .680 win% is 4th best in the league

But here's the one that got me:
2.52 GAA is 2nd best in the league. Since '60s expansion, I do not recall any Leafs team doing that (maybe I'm forgetting a team ..)
(last year 21st 3.18 GAA)
In spite of the injuries, that's pretty darn good. But it is only 25 games in ..

He's not making more then AM34....not on the Leafs
Depends on term. His agent and Paul can be persuasive. And the franchise caves in a lot to elite players. Last season people were saying $10m tops for Nylander. But generally you are correct.

He even threw his first punch tonight

I distinctly remember in his London Knights days, Mitch Marner diving on top of a scrum and delivering a rabbit punch to the back of an opponent's head. It was not super forceful, but it was Marner sticking up for one of his teammates (likely Matthew Tkatchuk or Max Jones stirring up poop).

Marner shouldn't make more than Matthews but I do think there is at least a discussion around that if he goes for 8 years.

Matthews signed for 13.5M x 4 years (55M). He'll be 30 when that contract ends so probably signs an 8 year deal at that point for what, 15? 16? - So 13.5x4 + 16M x 4 = 14.75/year averaged over the 8 years of an equivalent Marner extension.

So if Marner signed for 13.75-14M/8 years I wouldn't exactly be opposed to it if that was the deal breaker on him walking. Losing Marner over a million dollars isn't worth it even though it puts us in the perpetual overpay our stars relative to other teams.

It's absolutely only a deal I make after seeing postseason success though. I wouldn't come close to those numbers for him if he sign before May

Your last sentence is bang on. Let's see which Mitch shows up come April.

They didn't get to Willy until he had already gotten dressed, so he couldn't keep holding court tarpless.
This highlighted for me something we saw multiple times last night.

Reaves is so far behind the play that the Leafs are playing 4 on 5 at times. Twice he hadn't even gotten back into the defensive zone by the time the Leafs regained the puck off a dump in attempt and the puck was coming back the other way. Both times Reaves fumbled the stretch pass. Once off his skate, a second time it just bounced off his stick and into the offensive zone. He gets stuck on the ice because he can't get off the ice too.

Lorentz played 10:50 over 17 shifts
Reaves played 9:21 on 12 shifts.
