Justin Bourne suggested that Matthews doesn't need any more preseason games. I don't think he's wrong.

Yeah, maybe the last one when they have the opening night lineup playing together.

That, and maybe one in the middle, just to help him stay focused and stuff during camp. Definitely doesn't need more than that.

Ditto Nylander.  We're hoping for a long season and no sense wasting their energies.

It was only a pre-season game, the first one anyway, but don't tell that to coach Babcock.  He wasn't overally impressed with the Matthews-Nylander line either.

?Who did I like?? Babcock said. ?I liked (Travis) Dermott. I liked (Calle) Rosen.?

He then took a long pause, though it was clear he had no intention of naming another Leaf.

How about the play of forward Josh Leiyvo, Babcock was asked a few minutes later.

?I told you who I thought was good,? Babcock said.

And the regular line of Auston Matthews between Zach Hyman and William Nylander? Matthews and Nylander scored the Leafs goals, each coming on a power play.

?They were OK,? Babcock said. ?I expect them to be dominant two ways, not just with the puck.?

Ouch.

"You come out of three days of camp, you think everything went real good, but it goes to show you as a head coach in the NHL you should just live scared every day,? Babcock said, ?because a disaster is coming next. That?s how it works.

?We were terrible in the neutral zone. We turned the puck over and did not compete hard enough. It was tough and the puck just went in the net way too much. Any way you look at it, we got slapped. The team that worked the hardest, played the best, won. We get an opportunity to play again (Tuesday). We?ll have a look at it, get better, but that?s not the way we want to feel.?

Agree 100%, coach.

Liljegren's looked good. Not NHL-ready good, but good.

Some of his passing has been high-end NHL level, the stretch to put Martin in on the breakaway was breathtaking for an 18-year-old.

My favourite thing about that pass, is that it really looked like Liljgren took some mustard out of it. He can pass it harder than that and he had plenty of time to do so. So in my head I'm just going to assume that he knew Martin wouldn't have been able to handle anything hotter than that.

Babs can be as hard as he wants on Matthews line, but they looked pretty dominant on a few shifts last night.  First game of the preseason so you expect some rust.

True, first pre-season game and of course many are rusty, but, I still think Babcock made a general point.  He's a clever motivator and by saying what he said, he knows the players will want to prove themselves with a better effort & results (tonight).

He also wants the Matthews line to be a little more well-rounded or to not forget what to do without the puck.  Everyone could see the porous defence & general lack of defence from the forwards.  Not enough offence or not connecting (powerplay), plus poor goaltending.

With the way Senators conducted themselves by setting the tone for this game, Babcock obviously wants the Leafs to return the favour here tonight.

Not really much to ask for, just a better total team effort.  :)

I don't think last night was nearly as bad as Babs and others made it out to be, there were a few breakdowns and none were covered up by McBackup.

Pre-season or not, giving up 4 goals on 12 shots is a disgraceful performance.

The Leafs dominated at 5v5 to the point that only one player on the team was below 50% possession and the top line dominated to the tune of over 80% possession, they also looked like a cheat code on the PP at times.

Score effects definitely played a part, but the sky isn't falling.

Babs is obviously trying to light a fire under the bubble brigade still fighting for a spot.

I'd like to see Rosen line up to the right of Dermott.  I know it's not Rosen's natural side, but he's played the right side before, and I think those two are the best, most skilled options we have for the bottom pairing.

I'm not a fan of Carrick and didn't see anything last night that would change that.

He would be, as any coach would but Babs is not just any coach.

I'm expecting a better effort tonight goaltending-wise.
