Yeah, but it appears the first draft of the regular season lineup has Kadri playing with these two.OldTimeHockey said:cabber24 said:Is Levio-Kadri-Brown really a thing? I guess Babs is thinking shutdown line.
Kappi and Johnsson are not 4th liners. Glad to have an embarrassment of riches but I rather see Levio and Brown play 4th line minutes.
It's the first preseason game of the season.

I will pay for a Maple Leafs themed T-shirt where somebody exploits that with a Yin Yang symbol. I mean, literally, side-by-side, the middle part of 1691 generally makes the Yin Yang symbol.
I'll take 10% of royalties if one of you develops and markets this shirt.

Dermott pairing sucked. Still worried about our D... tossing grenades.
Yep, I don't think Matthews has a spot on this team...OldTimeHockey said:cabber24 said:Yeah, but it appears the first draft of the regular season lineup has Kadri playing with these two.OldTimeHockey said:cabber24 said:Is Levio-Kadri-Brown really a thing? I guess Babs is thinking shutdown line.

Your first preseason game is not a draft of the regular season. There's several players that watched the game on a TV. Are we to assume that Clark or Moore has a spot too? I mean, they were in the first draft of the line up.
Now, Brown could very well end up on Kadri's wing but I doubt that you see those 3 together very often.
Igor Ozhiganov (#92) ? Showed some promise as a #6 if he can polish up some rough edges to his game (took some bad routes, had some bad angles, hands looked a bit tight passing). His hockey fundamentals are fine ? he has good defensive instincts, knows where to stand, and can box out properly. He certainly stands out on this team with his size and reach. He stepped in and showed off a cannon from the point that missed the net just wide in the third period, and he was credited with four shots on goal on the game sheet.
Mike Babcock?s review was positive after the game: ?He can pass the puck, he can get it through, he sees the ice, his head?s up, he?s big. Good looking player.?
This isn?t based on anything solid, but it feels like Ozhiganov might have a bit of an early edge for the opening night #6 spot knowing he brings elements Babcock values that are not present elsewhere in the top six.

I missed this game, but I was following the score. The notes from MLHS paint a pretty promising picture.
Babcock has been dangling the carrot in front of Dermott and Johnsson (and to a lesser extent Leivo and Carrick, who were and are in a similar position in previous seasons) to not assume they've made the team (everyday is a try out) and demonstrate they can maintain their effort consistently.

According to Justin Bourne's recent Q&A on The Athletic and his guest appearance on the latest Leaf Report Podcast (the live one), in a defender, Dubas highly values zone exit capabilities (which has a very strong correlation to future zone entries with possession and thus good chances on goal); Babcock, via DJ Smith (defense coach), highly value physical toughness (which has borne out in the repeated signing and deployment of Roman Polak). Unfortunately, both those characteristics rarely reside in the same player, and certainly would not at affordable prices. So it'll be about the team mix, and it looks like Ozhiganov indeed has a leg up because he provides that different element.
