Rangers @ Maple Leafs - Dec. 19th, 7:00pm - TSN4, TSN 1050

Bullsh*t. I know we've gotten some bad breaks tonight but way too sloppy 40 shots the other night another 40 tonight. Gotta be better on that end.

My takeaway from this game is Matthews is back to Hart/Rocket form.

The only bright spot in my opinion and I?ll throw Knies in there as well. Only 2 who seemed to have some jump every shift. Jones got unlucky can fault him much. Too many passengers tonight.

Knies-Matthews-Nylander was scary good at times. All three can skate, forecheck, shoot, and hold the puck off of multiple defenders for a bit. They can muck it in, or snipe off the rush.

Some things the Leafs could've done to improve their chances was to get more bodies into Shesterkin's eyes. He picked up a lot momentum and puck feel off of clean look shots.

But is Knies-Matthews-Nylander better than Bertuzzi-Tavares-Nylander?

I was hoping to see Marner with Domi and Knies like Saturday see if that line could click again and I think you could have 3 deadly lines. Other than he 1st line the rest was meh last night. 3rd line wa horrible, JT for getting acknowledged pregame was non existent. Also I don't get how we go another game with no PP's. League is bias I think to some teams.

23-34-88 has a lot of overlapping qualities so they can attack as a group amorphously, Total Hockey style: doesn't matter who the checker is, who the carrier is, who the quarterback is, or who the triggerman is. Obviously there's a certain ideal circumstance where Knies checks the puck loose to Nylander who sauces a wide-open Matthews. Matthews has looked more comfortable and assertive since the switch, and that seems to have buoyed Knies' confidence in physical play (the kid realized he was as big, if not bigger, than most).

59-91-88 is a group that has specialties that harmonize together: Bertuzzi favours mucky playmaking, Tavares favours shooting out of a muck, and Willy is the transporter who brings the puck into the muck.

I think it's working okay with Marner (perhaps not quite as good as it was with red-hot Nylander) as he does good NZ carrying and supports the line defensively more than Nylander would. They lose a distance shooting option, but Marner has a sneaky quick release. I think Marner excels at mucky puck too in a different way. With Matthews, Marner would always try to thread a perfect highlight reel pass; but he's actually better at weaving order out of chaos with his spatial awareness. With Marner, Bertuzzi needs to think about shooting more even if it's just for rebounds.
