Red Wings @ Leafs - Mar. 24th, 7:00pm - CBC, TSN 1050

Babcock has fallen for Johnsson, whom he describes basically the same way he talks about Hyman/Brown/Komarov but with more speed and skill

This is Babcock on the game winning line?s showing last night:

which is a simplistic look at his coaching logic (which is a pretty advanced analytics take, despite how he kids about Corsi).

I'm happy when Babcock falls for players that actually have skill

I agree but ... when Glendenning shoved Matthews down, I grimaced.  I don't like how opposing teams are taking little runs at him.

I get that but imagine how Pittsburgh fans feel re: Crosby. They've dressed just about any stripe of goon/tough guy over his career and any of us think it would dissuade Naz from giving him the business?

That's just what happens to great players. No need to look further than how Sundin was treated despite Domi being in the lineup.

Yeah, I guess you're right.  Maybe Matthews himself needs to start giving guys who do that a bit of surreptitious stickwork.

Maybe a little, but, too much, and he'll just end up taking a bunch of penalties himself. Honestly, the best way for Matthews to deal with all of it is to keep putting the puck in the net. Make the other teams pay in the only way that really matters.

That's all well and good, but he won't be putting any pucks in the net if he's injured by some of these potshots.  Honestly, I'd rather have him take a few penalties so long as he gets the reputation of somebody not to be messed with.  Make it rather like getting in Belfour's office used to be: you can do it if you want, and you might get away with it.  Or you might not.
