Reimer Taking Nothing for Granted

There's no late night partying / boozing for him, he's a family man from a very young age, and he's committed to being the best he can possibly be.

I don't know. Considering the pasts of Patrick Roy, Eddie Belfour and the like I'm not sure being a straight arrow is necessarily a good thing when goaltending is concerned.

I've always compared Reimer with Cam Ward in terms of personality.  He's had a very good career so far.

I don't think you guys were being overly serious about the matter, but I'm not sure there's a particular personality profile that makes for the ideal goaltender, everyone's different.

But as far as giving hilarious quotes goes, goalies that score 'Boris Yeltsin' on the breathalyzer tend to fare much better.

You're right there's no personality trait that makes for a great goalie, but I like the fact that Reimer is grounded in life.  He's not going to go and get hammered in a bar or start doing lines of coke.  Not that every young player who's done these things has had his career derailed, but some of those distracting outside influences can certainly hurt him.  He'll be focused on his family and hockey.  Hopefully it pays off for him and the Leafs.

I feel like he's got such blind focus and belief in himself to be great at what he does. You need that if you want to be one of the best at what you do.

Rookie goalie in Toronto playing for a non-trap team?  Not sure many have walked that walk with any success.  Reims might not do it, but if anyone can, he seems like he could.

Brodeur, Cujo, Hasek?

Hasek? As in the guy who beats people up for fun in roller hockey leagues?  :P

A leaner, if not necessarily meaner, Reimer will weigh-in at the Mastercard Centre Friday morning for medicals some 20 pounds lighter than when he ended his magical run at the end of the 2010-11 season.

Strange, it says he's 20 lbs lighter, but they go onto say he's listed in the media guide at 220lbs.  MapleLeafs.com has him listed at 208lbs.  Who's right?

I was somewhat familiar with this story but had never seen it laid out quite like this, not ashamed to say I shed a tear or two...

omg....I already had more respect for Reimer than I have for many players, but this just cranked it up another notch. What an inspiring piece.

Little bit more on what Reimer was up to this summer:

I hope he's ready.  He didn't look great in preseason, but then again I remember when Belfour first came to the Leafs he was crap in preseason, was actually starting to get booed during preseason games, and then began his career as a Leaf with a shutout.

He (Reimer) also uncharacteristically allowed at least one soft goal per game.

Not that I saw.

His stats don't reflect it but the skaters seemed much more suspect to me than Reimer.

I'm not claiming his rebound control was great but some of the criticism on that was over the top. If a player shoots a puck low and the only way a goalie can stop it with his pad, there's going to be a rebound. Period. That's governed by the laws of physics and the properties of the materials involved. Millen harped on that at wrong times which continues to reinforce to me why he wasn't such a good NHL goalie or analyst.
