Crazy idea, but I will throw it out.

Bell and Rogers will take ownership of MLSE on July 1.  It would solve the territorial rights issue if they negotiated with the NHL to buy a second franchise to the GTA.

Since one owner cannot have two franchises, Bell and Rogers then split up, each taking one hockey franchise and dividing the remaining assets as they see fit to make things equitable.

I think Bell / Rogers have a big enough grip on Ontario as it is - I'm down for another GTA / CDN team so long as its interests are in hockey and not building condos or package bundling

You take that back

However, Graeme Roustan, the head of GTASE, is quick to quash speculation about a professional hockey team being lured to town.

"The facility is multi-purpose and flexible," he said. "If I get a call from the [International Ice Hockey Federation] and they say they want to have the worlds there, I'm ready to go."

Makes a bunch of sense to me. The league would love it - the owners get their franchise fee. Fans would love it. The Leafs would get a fair territorial financial credit without outside bickering.

They could even things up with broadcasting rights - the one owning the new team could get a larger portion of Leafs broadcasts, etc for example.

It solves the problem and avoids a court fight.

My concern for the plausibility is whether there would be any antitrust or CRTC issues - have to give that one some thought. I suspect they could get around it with some structuring but aside from how they divide up the Leafs revenue pie and project the growth in asset value of the new team, that would seem to be the trickiest area.

Having said that, I suspected something like this could be in the works when the Leafs deal was announced.

I don't think the idea is crazy at all.

Hard to understand why you feel that way...after all, using a hockey team and new arena as the pretext for urban commercial redevelopment has worked so well in Arizona.

Why, they have had a steady stream of applicants to buy that franchise.

The Brooklyn Islanders??  Not now, but...

Plans unveiled for NHL-calibre arena in Markham

City to contribute $162.5 million

Maybe I'm being naive, but I can't help but think this is still some sort of pipe dream.

It probably is, but, I mean, who knows? Maybe, with the arena in place, getter another team in the GTA becomes a little closer to being a reality. I don't see it happening, but with the uncertainty surrounding a number of teams and their financial viability . . .

I just think it makes too much sense to have a second team in this market. My money says it happens sooner or later.

It's not so much a second team in Toronto; I do think that is a good likelihood eventually.

It's the arena in Markham.  I don't know.  Just seems like a less than ideal place to put a 20,000-seat arena.  And I question the accessability to the arena.

It would be nice to have an NHL calibre team in the GTA.

Ya I know the joke is getting old.

Public money to build private arenas is the biggest taxpayer ripoff going. Public money to build a private arena without a team just borders on abject stupidity. If Markham approves this, they deserve whatever they get.

Interesting. My company has an office pretty close to there. It would probably be a lot more easily accessible for me than the ACC.

I agree with the accessibility part. I play softball in and around that area and know how congested traffic can get. It sounds like it would be far enough away from Highway 404 that Highway 407 might be the quickest alternative. Fortunately, though, York Region is developing their bus routes along Highway 7, so that would be one alternative.

It sounds like this rink is going to go ahead.

Now thanks to the absolute incompetency of MLSE to ice a team
that could compete with any other NHL team (well maybe
they could compete with the Islanders...) the Leafs will not even be the
best NHL team in Toronto.

And yes I know that I don't even know what team will be coming. Even an
expansion franchise would give the Leafs a run for performance.

Sad.

It's not getting old...it IS old.

Private money to build a private arena without a team has not worked so well in Toronto either.

How do you mean? Leaving aside that the ACC had two teams to play in it it's worked out fairly spectacularly well for both of them financially not to mention the city has enjoyed whatever nebulous benefits to the tax base a downtown stadium would provide without contributing to the construction costs. I'd say it's worked out pretty well for everyone involv-

Oh...you mean because the teams aren't very good. LOL!!!!!! What a fresh faced and zippy joke you told there. Boy howdy, it sure subverted my expectations about the topic at hand. Here I am talking about the financial implications of constructing a massive sports complex and you, and forgive me if I get this wrong, hit the good old Maple Leafs with a well constructed zinger about how there's a divergence between the team's financial performance and their on-ice play. What a regular Will Rogers you are, taking the serious topic at hand and turning it on it's head so artfully and freshly. Way better than that super old joke you pointed out earlier.

I believe the article read that just half the money was to be public. I'm not sure how that compares to other "disasters" but isn't this market (above all) a pretty safe one where the city will get a return on it's investment? Obviously I have no idea but my feeling is the city has looked at this pretty hard.
