Rest in Peace Tony Gwynn

I recall now that he had cancer, but totally forgot about it until this unfortunate news.

One of the greatest hitters I've ever seen.

Sad to hear. You didn't get to see him much back in the day out in San Diego but whenever you did he seemed like one of the genuinely good guys in the game.

He had a season where he hit .394 and finished 7th in MVP voting (mind you over 110 games).  He had an unbelievable career.  8 times he led the AL in batting average.  7 times he led in hits.  I missed out on his early years of success but my Dad got me into baseball right around 1990 (I was 5) and Gwynn was my favourite player.  Every single baseball glove I ever owned growing up was a "Tony Gwynn"

Just read on Twitter that he struck out 434 times in over 9,288 career at-bats. Wow.

That is incredible

It's pretty impressive, no doubt, but there are some pretty amazing hitters in history in terms of K rates. Joe Sewell, a hall of famer from the '20s, only struck out 114 times in 7132 at-bats including multiple seasons where he only struck out 3 or 4 times.

But I think the all-time impressive one is Joe Dimaggio. Gwynn and Sewell were contact hitters, striking out 3 and 2 times as often as they hit home-runs. Dimaggio, however, hit 361 homeruns in 13 years while only striking out 369 times.

He had 3,141 hits -- 18th on the all-time list -- a career .338 average and won eight batting titles to tie Honus Wagner's NL record.

Gwynn never hit below .309 in a full season. He spread out his batting titles from 1984, when he batted .351, to 1997, when he hit .372.

Tony Gwynn, a rare type.  Beloved in San Diego.
A great player that embodied the love of the game and the respect to the fans.

Rest in peace.
