Rielly to miss 8 weeks with fractured foot

I wonder if Rielly's foot was the thing bothering him before last night ? the injury he's been dealing with ? and an otherwise innocuous contact last night broke it.  Did anyone see the play where he was injured?  I missed the game myself.

He blocked a shot, was on the ice for a bit, hobbled to the bench, went down the tunnel, and came back a few minutes later.  He seemed fine the rest of the game.  But probably after the adrenaline wore off and he got out of his boot did the severity get the best of him.

Thanks for the description. I missed the game as well and couldn't really find anyone talking about him being injured in the game.

Yep, thanks Peter D & wnc096.

I give it 2 weeks before a trade for a d-man, likely Kapanen involved, or Bracco

After 2 minutes' reflection, this is just as well.  Sandin and Liljegren are the future of the backend.  Bring them both up and let them take their lumps.  They might as well learn on the job earlier in the supposed "window" than later. If we miss the playoffs this season, so be it.  Enough injuries to key players have happened so it insulates Keefe and Dubas from all but unreasonable criticism.

Honestly think we would be better off. 6 we have playing now have been horrid. Keep Holl, Dermott and Reilly next season other 3 can go.
Sign Pietrangelo and there?s your 6.

Muzzin has been serviceable. No reason to just jettison assets without getting anything back.

Muzzin is fine and a defence first D man, which is something we need. I don't see Pietrangelo being available and even if he is do we want a 30 year old at $$$x 7 years?

I'm kind of hoping Muz likes playing here and would be interested in re-signing for a reasonable rate. I wouldn't mind another 2 or 3 years of him at somewhere in the range of his current $4M. I suspect he'll be looking for as much term as possible but I'd be pretty hesitant at even 4 years. He's already on the wrong side of 30 and has never been the fastest skater.

Then it would be something like
Rielly - Dermott
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Liljegren

It's never going to be a strong D corps baring miracle draft or some very improbable trade for someone who suddenly blossoms here.

(Fun side note...we now have over $20M on LTIR although half of that is Horton and Clarkson)

Ugh. An already thin defence gets even thinner. Forwards need to get back and pick up their man with gusto and then score a helluva lot of goals. Sandin sent down to keep his minutes and special teams high. Well, Sandman, welcome to the NHL. I'm sure your AHL minutes are here waiting for you. Just be sure to block out the white noise.

Ride the youngins and replenish assets for taking a run next year.

Seems premature, no?

Meh, they're already doing well without Muzzin, Rielly's had a terrible year so far.  It's not full-on giving up, just letting the youth take a larger role and stockpiling assets for next year.

Edit: and I wouldn't say this if Barrie and Muzzin had more term.  Given they're UFA, get something for them.  I'm fairly confident in saying the Leafs won't make the Eastern finals, let alone the cup finals.

Barring an additional injury, Sandin will be burning the ELC year AND exceeding 40 games played this season towards free agency eligibility.

There are 36 games left.  Sandin has played 6.  So if Sandin misses 3 of the remaining 36, he won't exceed that 40-game mark.  Both Muzzin and Reilly should be back with 3 games left in the regular season (Muzzin back way before that).  It doesn't seem like a given that Sandin is going to play every game (except 3) for the rest of the season does it?

That?s assuming they don?t need him in the playoffs. If Sandin is good enough over the course of the rest of the season, he?ll be in the lineup in the postseason, for sure (assuming the Leafs make it, of course).

So, this is not good.

I guess we'll see how this plays out until the trade deadline.  Great opportunity for Dermott and Sandin.

The Leafs need to get back to playing their high-flying offence with the forwards and the defencemen on the same page, making split second decisions while the goaltender does his job.

The loss against the Panthers Sunday merely illustrates how bad the Leafs are when everything falls apart, so to speak, and Keefe gets outcoached.

O the other hand, when the goaltending does it?s job well and the offence clicks, and the team adhere?s to Keefe?s system, the Leafs have proven tough to beat.

Calling up Sandin will give him the opportunity to gain some experience playing in the big league and will give Dubas & co., the opportunity to do some fine-tuned assessiment regarding the team?s defence, where it stands, what can be added, taken away, or replaced (trade deadline), if or any at all.

It?s certain we?ll be feeling more at ease once Muzzin returns to fill out the defence lineup.  Can?t wait.
