Roman Polak to Leafs

Nonis says they're comfortable with what they have on defence now. Want Gardiner and Rielly to play big roles.

They talked about wanting to bring back Franson this week. So I wouldn't be surprised to see this:

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Rielly-Polak
Gleason-Franson

Well, at least we won't have to worry about the team making the playoffs. :-\

Possibly the worst part about this is it means the Leafs likely aren't in on Stralman, as Polak will take that RH 2nd pairing spot.

I'd much rather see Granberg over Franson, Franson is brutal and not worth what he thinks he is....of course we could just change the name to the Toronto McDavids...

I'm OK with moving Gunner,I don't think retaining him would make that much difference this coming year...I'm all for change in a failing season last year...I don't know Polak, but he can't hurt.

Considering one of the biggest problems our defence had last season was getting the puck out of our own zone and the single biggest knock on Polak is that he's awful at moving the puck, he definitely can hurt.

That's a pretty big knock. Are you going by what you've read about him, or by watching him play?

If the new guy knows how to chip the puck out or bank it off the glass to clear the zone that's alright...We got Gardner and Reilly to carry it out.

Both really. I've liked Polak for awhile now. Before I heard what we gave up I was actually pretty happy about the trade. Polak's a big mean guy who can acually skate, if he didn't have pretty big warts in other parts of his game (like when the puck is on his stick) he'd be a legitimate top-4 guy as opposed to someone whose more suited on the bottom pairing.

Interesting.

Btw...I wouldn't be too worried about what we gave up if you think we got a good player in return. Although I think Gunnarsson will be missed.

Petter Granberg will be in the line up. There were multiple reports last season that the brass thinks he's ready.

We got a good player in return but we gave up a better one. That's how I summarize this deal.

If we were the team getting the pick and the salary retention then I wouldn't be as upset as I am. I still wouldn't be over the moon about it because in an attempt to improve our defence we gave away our most reliable defenceman, but at least the trade would indicate that the Leafs management understood Gunnar was the better player.

Just for those keeping up.  A team that struggled significantly to play defense are not bringing back: Gunnarsson, Kulemin and McClement

But are in talks to try and retain Raymond and Franson.

Well, a lot of that is kind of moot since they decided to retain the man responsible for the porous defensive system. So, questionable decisions everywhere.

If that isn't a knock on Phaneuf, I don't know what is.

I see them taking a real good run at McDavid.

That's a definite possibility. It's hard to gauge what the direction of this team really is right now, and that concerns me. I could see them dropping down to the bottom, but, I also see a very real possibility that they're going to end up like the Leaf teams from the beginning of the cap era - not good enough for the playoffs, but not bad enough to get a really good draft pick.

I'm OK with the move. I think STL won the trade though. The biggest thing I don't like about it is the loss of another draft pick. This team needs to really start hanging on to picks.
